Leonardo DiCaprio Testifies In Trial Against Fugees Rapper Accused Of Illegally Funneling $30M To Obama Campaign

A high-profile court case involving former Fugees rapper Prakazrel “Pras” Michel has featured testimony from Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Michel has been accused of illegally using shell accounts to donate tens of millions of dollars to Barack Obama’s 2012 election campaign, with the money allegedly being funnelled to Michel by Malaysian financier Jho Low. DiCaprio was called to the stand in relation to his past connections with Low, who is now a fugitive on the run. The actor admitted during questioning that he had known Low and had been impressed by his success but denied any knowledge of illegal activities.

Michel’s charges include a failure to register himself as a foreign agent of the Chinese government, receiving large sums of money to lobby on behalf of China and witness tampering. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts. Low, meanwhile, is accused of embezzling $4.5bn from state investment fund 1MDB in Malaysia.

The court also heard from various witnesses that Michel had wired thousands of dollars and requested shadow donations to Obama’s campaign from them. He is said to have received $70m himself. Michel and Low are also alleged to have lobbied the Trump administration on behalf of Beijing in the hope of facilitating the extradition of a Chinese dissident living in America.

The case is ongoing, with the most serious of Michel’s charges carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
