Montana’s House of Representatives was thrown into chaos on Monday when leftist protesters disrupted proceedings after a Democratic transgender lawmaker was censured for accusing Republicans of having “blood on their hands” for supporting a bill that restricts gender surgeries.

The protesters, who were supporting transgender state representative Zooey Zephyr (D.), shouted “Let her speak” from the gallery, bringing the session to a halt for around half an hour. Police eventually escorted the protesters from the gallery, arresting seven for criminal trespass.

Zephyr was censured by the Republican-controlled House for “hate-filled testimony” after speaking out against a bill that would ban transgender treatments for minors. Since then, Zephyr has been prevented from participating in debates on the floor, which she called “fundamentally undemocratic.”

“No amount of silencing tactics will deter me from standing up for the rights of the transgender community,” Zephyr said.

Republican lawmakers condemned the protest, describing it as an “insurrection.”

The Youth Health Protection Act, which would ban hormone therapies and gender surgeries for minors in Montana, was passed by the legislature last week and is set to be signed into law by Gov. Greg Gianforte (R.).

This incident comes just a month after leftist protesters disrupted a House session in Tennessee, leading to the expulsion of two Democratic members who were eventually reinstated.
