LONDON (Reuters) – Julia Roberts Takes on Multilayered Disaster Thriller in “Leave The World Behind”
Executive produced by former U.S. President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, “Leave The World Behind” is a thrilling disaster movie that showcases Julia Roberts in a unique role.
Roberts plays Amanda, a cynical advertising director, in this adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s best-selling novel. The story follows Amanda, her husband, and their two children as they embark on an impromptu holiday in a small Long Island town. However, their peaceful getaway takes a dark turn when a man and his daughter, portrayed by Mahershala Ali and Myha’la Herrold, claim to be the owners of their vacation home and request to stay the night. As tensions rise and strange events unfold, the two families find themselves trapped together, trying to make sense of the chaos surrounding them.
During the film’s premiere in London, Roberts shared, “There’s always about 17 and a half things going on at one time in every scene for each person. It was just all the layers of the people and the circumstances.”
Roberts embraced the challenge of portraying a character who is inherently suspicious and prickly, a departure from her usual roles. She aimed to make Amanda both human and likable.
Director Sam Esmail cautioned fans of Alam’s book that the film is not a faithful adaptation. He explained, “Something that works in a literary medium may not work in a cinematic medium. I was very upfront with Rumaan that I really was going to take liberties with the interpretation. I ran through all the ideas, he was on board and then in a lot of ways I think we both got what we wanted because his book and the film are kind of two different standalone pieces that kind of operate independent of one another.”
“Leave The World Behind” also features Ethan Hawke and Kevin Bacon, and will be released in select cinemas and on Netflix on Dec. 8.
