Lauren Boebert Declares Victory – Race Likely Headed to Recount
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has declared victory over challenger Adam Frisch, even as the race appears headed to a recount.
Boebert, 35, is leading Frisch, 55, by just 551 votes, according to unofficial results from the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office as of Nov. 18.
Five counties still have ballots left to count.
Boebert’s lead had been over 1,000 votes earlier in the month.
Per Colorado law, a recount is automatically triggered if the final margin is less than or equal to 0.5 percent. Additionally, a party may request a recount even if the margin is not that close.
Boebert, who is seeking a second term in Congress, declared victory late Thursday.
“Great news tonight. As almost all the votes have finally been tallied, I’m told that there are less than 200 votes outstanding, which makes me so happy to announce we have won this race,” she said in a video statement.
Boebert told the Washington Examiner that she will send a legal team to monitor the recount, which she said will happen, but noted that recounts typically don’t change the final tally by much.
“This certainly isn’t going to be anything that changes the outcome of this race,” she said, adding that “once every legal vote is counted, I will have won this race.”
Frisch in a statement Thursday thanked volunteers who have been working on getting ballots “cured,” or helping fix issues with ballots, enabling the votes to count even though the election took place on Nov. 8. Colorado law requires election officials to alert a voter if their ballot had a problem and gives the voter time to fix it. The deadline was the end of the day Nov. 16.
“The outpouring of support from around the country and even the world since Election Day has been overwhelming & humbling. Running in this race, getting to know so many people in my district & hearing your stories has been an honor of a lifetime,” Frisch said on Twitter. “Stay tuned.”
The Colorado race is one of the few that remain uncalled.
Alaska’s at-large Congressional District is one of the others, as the second round of ranked choice voting has not yet taken place. Rep. Mary Peltola (D-Alaska) received the most votes in the first round.
The rest are in California.
State Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley is ahead in the race for California’s 3rd Congressional District, Republican John Duarte is ahead in the race for the state’s 13th Congressional District, Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) is ahead in the race for California’s 22nd Congressional District.
One uncalled seat is sure to remain in Democrat hands, due to the state’s top-two primary system. Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) is ahead of Democrat David Kim in the race for California’s 34th Congressional District.
As of Friday, Republicans have secured 218 seats in the next Congress. Democrats have secured 212, including the one for California’s 34th district. Republicans will take control of the House in January 2023, when new members are sworn in.
