Laura Loomer, one of President Donald Trump’s most influential outside allies, returned from Ukraine last week with an unexpected message for the MAGA movement: she had been wrong about the war.
Like many of Trump’s supporters, Loomer had long opposed U.S. military aid to Ukraine, reflecting the Republican Party’s broader divide between traditional national security hawks and the increasingly dominant America First wing. But after touring bombed neighborhoods, meeting Ukrainian officials, and documenting the destruction caused by Russian missile and drone strikes for her millions of followers, Loomer publicly reversed herself.

“We need to have moral clarity. I don’t care if people in the GOP disavow me. They will come to see how evil Russia is as they continue funding Iran with weapons to murder US soldiers as they call for President Trump to be assassinated,” she wrote in a series of posts on X. “I am my own person. I think for myself because I am not a Russian bot.”
Her reversal also carries unusual weight inside Trump’s political orbit. Trump himself amplified a clip from Loomer’s interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Truth Social Thursday, writing simply, “very good!!!!”
Trumpworld insiders told the Washington Examiner the shift could further reinforce the president’s evolving views on the conflict.
“I think it’s more than significant,” said one senior Trump administration official. “I don’t want to say that President Trump and Laura are totally in lockstep on every issue, but it’s safe to say she has his ear. I think she has her finger on the pulse of the base in a way that many, including some in the president’s inner DC circle, do not — and they find that grating.”
Trump himself has steadily signaled growing support for Ukraine in recent months. Trump allies officials previously told the Washington Examiner that the president has been impressed by Ukraine’s rapid expansion of its domestic defense industry and its increasingly sophisticated long-range drone campaign against Russian targets. More recently, Trump announced that the United States would grant licenses for Ukraine to produce its own Patriot missiles and is scheduled to host Zelensky at the White House this week.
“The President has a humanitarian heart and wants this war settled so the senseless killing ends,” a White House official previously told the Washington Examiner. “The President and his team have worked very hard to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and he remains optimistic that we’ll ultimately get a peace deal done.”
Although Loomer has never served in either Trump administration, few outside government have wielded more influence over the personnel surrounding the president.
Last April, she met privately with Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and senior White House officials to argue that several national security aides were insufficiently loyal to the president’s agenda. Trump subsequently dismissed multiple officials she had criticized, including former National Security Council officials David Feith, Brian Walsh, and Thomas Boodry, and retired Air Force Gen. Timothy Haugh, formerly the director general of the National Security Agency and commander of Cyber Command.

Loomer’s reversal also appears to reflect a broader shift among some prominent MAGA voices as Russia’s attacks on Ukraine have intensified.
“Ukraine has been fighting for their very existence against an evil dictator. I see now the importance of the Ukrainian victory against Russia. I hope Trump and the people of the United States will lend their support,” conservative podcaster Tim Pool wrote to his nearly 3 million followers Thursday evening.
