Latino GOP condemns Petro’s threats to ‘overthrow’ Trump

The article reports that Colombian President Gustavo Petro faced strong criticism from Latino Republican lawmakers after he suggested that U.S. President donald Trump should be removed from office. In an interview on Univision, Petro indicated that the easiest way might be for Trump himself to step down, implying a call for his removal. This statement was interpreted by Rep. Carlos Giménez and Rep. Maria elvira Salazar as a threat to “overthrow” Trump, raising concerns about Petro being a threat to regional security. The tension follows a series of clashes between Trump and Petro, including trump’s accusations against Petro of encouraging drug production in Colombia and his decision to revoke Petro’s visa due to Petro’s participation in a pro-Palestinian protest. The article highlights the deteriorating relationship between the two leaders and the political fallout from Petro’s remarks.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro drew backlash from Latino lawmakers for suggesting that President Donald Trump should be removed from office.

“Humanity has a first offramp, it is to choose to change Trump in various ways,” Petro said in Spanish on Monday in Univision’s El Reporte Coronell. “The easiest way may be through Trump himself.”

“If not — get rid of Trump,” Petro said and snapped his fingers.

Rep. Carlos Giménez (R-FL) translated Petro’s comments as suggesting that the United States should “overthrow” Trump.

“Colombia’s narcoterrorist-in-chief, Gustavo Petro, has just threatened to ‘overthrow’ President Trump,” Giménez wrote on X Monday.

“Petro threats must be taken seriously, he is a genuine threat to the safety & security of our hemisphere.”

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) issued a similarly scathing response on X, writing in Spanish.

“After this interview, one thing is clear: Petro has lost his mind. He no longer cares about Colombia or its people. He would rather sink his own country to satisfy his failed socialist agenda and please his narco–dictator friends,” Salazar wrote in a subsequent translated post.

“And now he says Trump must be ‘removed’? Petro, little dictator-in-training, did you forget that Donald Trump was democratically elected by the American people?” Salazar added. “Who can take a wannabe tyrant like this seriously? Colombia is at risk, and with Petro in power, so is its historic relationship with the United States.”

This interview with Petro comes after Trump called him “an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia” in a Truth Social post Sunday.

“Petro, a low-rated and very unpopular leader, with a fresh mouth toward America, better close up these killing fields immediately, or the United States will close them up for him, and it won’t be done nicely,” Trump wrote.

Trump and Petro have clashed over U.S. strikes on boats that were allegedly carrying drugs, which have killed Colombians.

Last month, the State Department revoked Petro’s visa over his participation in a pro-Palestinian protest in New York City. During the protest, he called on the U.S. military to “disobey Trump’s order.”

The Washington Examiner has reached out to the White House for comment.
