Late Night’s Elitism Problem

Late night TV has been liberal for some time, but a newer ideological strain infects its comedy lineup.

Call it elitism on steroids.

Stephen Colbert offered a prime example recently while protecting President Joe Biden from soaring gas prices under his watch.

“Today, the average gas price in America hit an all-time record high of over $4/gallon. OK, that stings, but a clean conscience is worth a buck or two. It’s important. I’m willing to pay $4/gallon. Hell, I’ll pay $15 a gallon b/c I drive a Tesla.”

Where does one start? Let’s set aside how Americans also get their gas from other unsavory sources, including Iran. What about hard-working citizens already struggling with Bidenflation, who are now asked to pay even more at the pump?

Colbert shrugs off those real-world consequences just like he ignores Democratic gaffes.

The old Colbert, not as beholden to his ideological masters, might have mocked Colbert 2.0 for being so out of touch. Instead, he carries on as if his viewers also receive millions for telling scripted yuks five nights a week.

If only this were an isolated incident.

Late night comics routinely rail against Blue Collar USA when its citizens veer from progressive groupthink. No better example exists than comedians mocking lockdown protesters during the heart of the pandemic.

Regular Joes and Janes watched as draconian measures all but capsized their businesses in 2020. They were spittin’ mad, and who could blame them? At the time, reasonable folks could disagree about the lockdowns. Helpful? Harmful? Unnecessary? Vital? The pandemic was new, and we didn’t have as many facts as we do now.

That hardly defends how Colbert and fellow hard Leftist Jimmy Kimmel savaged the protesters from the comfort of their home studios. Colbert assumed every protester wore a MAGA hat, mocking them for daring to defend their livelihoods.

“Because nothing says ‘never surrender’ like a Confederate flag,” Colbert said during an April broadcast.

Kimmel sang from the same hymnal, calling these protesters “suicidal,” something he’d never said about Black Lives Matters protesters who gathered en masse, for months on end, often committing violence along the way. For the former “Man Show” host, suffering citizens were just another way to mock President Donald Trump.

Nothing more.

“A big reason why these protests are gaining steam is because our president is encouraging them,” the host added. “Despite everyone who works for him telling people to stay at home, despite the official White House mandate being ‘shelter in place,’ over the weekend, the guy who runs the White House tweeted, ‘LIBERATE MICHIGAN,’ ‘LIBERATE MINNESOTA,’ and ‘LIBERATE VIRGINIA.’ This from a man who refuses to even liberate Melania.”

“The Daily Show” gleefully joined Kimmel and Colbert, sending “punching down” specialist Jordan Klepper to taunt lockdown protesters. It’s Klepper’s job to do “man on the street” interviews” with conservatives, sharing the most embarrassing moments with viewers. Does anyone think Klepper getting schooled on an issue would crack the “Daily Show” lineup?

So naturally, Klepper sided with nurses who were protesting the anti-lockdown protesters, a bit devoid of empathy for those struggling to get by.

A year later, late night hosts like John Oliver and Seth Meyers gaslit viewers into thinking the BLM/Antifa protests sparked by George Floyd’s death were, truly, “mostly peaceful.”

Tell that to the shop owners who watched their businesses burn to the ground across the country. They weren’t the rich and powerful, just entrepreneurs who poured their souls into the American Dream.

Meyers famously dubbed the Portland protests “graffiti and light property damage,” echoing MSNBC talking points. Here’s guessing he doesn’t know any Oregon residents whose lives were upended by said “damage.”

Oliver piled on, blaming Fox News for the allegedly false narratives about left-wing violence in cities like Portland.

Little has changed with late night elitism since then, but it’s often what they don’t say that’s most revealing.

Late night yuksters are doing viewers a disservice by propping up the Biden presidency. Truth tellers, and that’s how they see themselves, can’t sit by as inflation and gas prices soar. It’s exactly what they’re doing, in part, because their personal finances are just fine, thank you. Plus, their preferred party is mostly to blame.

The same elitism stains “Saturday Night Live,” more interested in mocking Fox News stars than the Commander in Chief. The venerable show all but ignores Team Biden these days, along policies that impact all Americans.

Like late night comedy hosts, they’ve been mocking flyover country for some time. Arguably the most shocking example came in 2016 when “SNL” debuted a faux Trump campaign ad.

The clip asked “real Americans” to weigh in on Trump’s upstart campaign, only to reveal his supporters as Nazis, racists and white supremacists.

Recent “SNL” episodes avoid sketches about gas prices or inflation gone wild. Doesn’t fit their preferred narrative, and who cares if Middle America is suffering? “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels can still pay his bills on time, right?

Modern-day Democrats pose as the Everyman party, ready to fight for the working poor. They still preach that message, but it’s getting harder to believe them. When Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg tells Americans to buy expensive electric cars to battle high gas prices, you know there’s a messaging meltdown.

The same is true for late night’s elite squad. They put progressive talking points over both the truth and the people hurt by it. And there’s little funny about that.
