Kevin McCarthy Refuses to Commit to Biden Impeachment

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy isn’t chomping at the bit to impeach President Joe Biden.

McCarthy, who is positioned to be voted speaker by colleagues if Republicans win back control of the House in the midterm elections this November, was noncommittal when pressed on Fox News, arguing Democrats have weaponized impeachment in a way he does not want to replicate.

“Look, one thing we learned that the Democrats did is they used impeachment for political reasons,” McCarthy told host Maria Bartiromo in an interview that aired Sunday.

“We believe in the rule of law.” he added. “We’re not going to pick and choose just because somebody has power. We’re going to uphold the law. At any time, if someone breaks the law and the ramification becomes impeachment, we would move towards that, but we’re not going to use it for political purposes.”

House Democrats led two successful impeachment efforts against former President Donald Trump. One involved the president’s conduct with Ukraine. The other impeachment charge accused him of inciting the Capitol riot. Both times, Trump was acquitted by a GOP-led Senate.

Biden, too, has faced articles of impeachment brought by Republicans on matters such as the disastrous withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan and the president’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border situation. But the articles have gone nowhere in a chamber run by Democrats.

Still, Republicans such as Rep. Greg Murphy of North Carolina are clamoring for impeachment. And the power dynamic is poised to change, with Biden’s approval rating in the tank and prognosticators favoring the GOP to win the House.

McCarthy insisted that Republicans aim to dial down the political temperature, though he would not rule out impeachment if the situation demanded it.

“Our focus is going to be securing our border, making us energy independent, bringing these prices down, making our schools and streets safe again, and holding this administration accountable,” the California Republican said. “And we will take the facts to wherever the facts go because America’s been through too much with people playing politics with the concept of impeachment. But if it rises to that level, we would have the law determine that.”
