Olympic champion Katie Ledecky delivered an outstanding performance at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, tying a record set⁣ by her former Olympic teammate Michael Phelps.

Ledecky ‌secured her 15th individual world title with a dominant win in the 1500-meter freestyle,‍ matching Phelps’ 15 individual world titles. While Phelps remains the most decorated Olympian in history with 28 medals, ⁤Ledecky’s⁢ achievement is remarkable.

Ledecky, 27, finished the 1500-meter freestyle with a time of ⁢15:26.27, ‌her third best time ever in the event. She dominated the race, finishing 17​ seconds ahead of her⁣ closest competitor, Italy’s Simona Quadrella.

After the race, Ledecky expressed her happiness with the outcome, acknowledging the hard ⁤work⁤ and support from her coaches and team. She said, “It hurt a lot, but I am really‌ happy with the outcome.”

Ledecky expressed her admiration for Phelps, stating that​ she had looked⁢ up to him since ‍she​ was a child.‌ She never imagined she would be in a position to tie his record and considers it an honor to win medals for Team USA.

Ledecky still has the opportunity to break Phelps’ ‍record entirely, as she has the 800-meter race coming‍ up on Friday and ⁣Saturday.

Phelps, despite seeing his records fall since his ⁢retirement, celebrated alongside French ⁣swimmer Leon⁣ Marchand, who broke Phelps’ “untouchable” record in ‌the‌ 400 Individual Medley. ⁢Phelps congratulated Marchand and awarded him the gold medal.

Phelps, known for his‌ sportsmanship, provided commentary during Marchand’s race,‍ expressing his⁣ belief that the young swimmer had the potential to break the four-minute mark in the event.
