Kari Lake targets disenchanted Dems and independents for her AZ Senate campaign.
EXCLUSIVE: Kari Lake, the Republican candidate, gears up for a fierce Senate race in Arizona
Kari Lake, the Republican candidate, is preparing for a highly competitive Senate race in Arizona. She may face off against Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and incumbent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) in a three-way contest. However, Lake remains undeterred and believes that many individuals from the opposing side may end up supporting her bid instead.
“I think we’re having a lot of independents, and even some Democrats, who are disaffected and looking at their party recognizing that it doesn’t work,” Lake told the Washington Examiner in an interview. “I think a lot of Democrats are starting to look at the Republican platform and recognizing that maybe they’ve been Republican the whole time — or at least maybe they’re leaning toward becoming Republican now.”
Lake’s Rise to Prominence
Lake has become a well-known figure in Arizona, particularly after her high-profile run for governor in 2022 against then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs. During her campaign, she positioned herself as a candidate aligned with Donald Trump, emphasizing his policies. While she previously focused on Trump’s claims of a stolen 2020 election, she has now shifted her attention to issues such as immigration and crime.
Now, Lake aims to leverage her experience in Arizona politics to make her way to Washington, D.C. as part of the Republican Party’s efforts to gain control of the Senate, which is currently held by Democrats.
“The Senate is so critical right now. I mean, we don’t know what’s going to happen in this next election,” Lake said. “There’s a chance maybe we won’t hold Congress. Now, I believe we’re gonna get President Trump in the White House. But God forbid that doesn’t happen, the Senate is what is going to be holding our country together by a thread. So we have to make sure that the Senate is firmly in the hands of Republicans.”
The Battle for Arizona
The Senate election in Arizona is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested races of the 2024 cycle. The stakes were raised when Sen. Kyrsten Sinema announced her departure from the Democratic Party to identify as an independent, potentially paving the way for a three-way race in a crucial swing state.
Gallego has already declared his intention to challenge Sinema, which could divide the Democratic and independent votes if the incumbent decides to run for re-election. Lake sees this as an opportunity for her campaign.
“I think we have a really great opportunity,” Lake said. “And most of the independents in our state lean conservative, they’ve just … kind of had it with the Democrat-versus-Republican, typical politics as usual — and maybe they’re just sick of the Republican Party or the Democrat Party and they’ve decided to become independent but they lean conservative.”
The Power of Independent Voters
Independent voters constitute the largest voting demographic in Arizona, accounting for nearly 35% of the state’s electorate, according to the secretary of state’s office. Republicans come in a close second at 34.4%. This means that if the GOP can attract enough independent voters in 2024, it could lead to significant victories in this swing state.
For the first time since 2016, the independent bloc holds the title of the largest voting demographic in the state, making it a crucial group for candidates to court. Recent polling indicates that a majority of independent voters identify as politically “moderate,” while a significant portion lean conservative.
That’s why Lake says her “America First” campaign, which aligns itself heavily with Trump, may resonate with several independents and Democrats who are looking to venture away from their respective candidates.
“We’ll admit we’ve got a mess on our hands thanks to the absolute destructive policies of Joe Biden. We can turn this around,” Lake said. “We the people can get our government back and restore prosperity for Americans.”

What issues has Lake shifted her attention to in her campaign for the Senate race?
Ce. Lake acknowledges the tough competition but remains confident in her ability to appeal to a broad base of voters.
One of Lake’s primary focuses is on addressing the concerns of disenchanted Democrats and independents who may be looking for an alternative. She believes that many individuals within the opposing parties are beginning to recognize the flaws in their own platforms and are considering aligning with the Republican Party.
Lake’s rise to prominence in Arizona began with her 2022 run for governor, where she positioned herself as a strong ally of Donald Trump. While she initially focused on the 2020 election controversy, she has since shifted her attention to issues such as immigration and crime, which are of great concern to the people of Arizona.
With her experience in Arizona politics, Lake sees the Senate race as an opportunity to contribute to the Republican Party’s efforts to gain control of the Senate. She believes that the Senate holds great importance in maintaining the stability of the country, especially in uncertain times.
The battle for Arizona’s Senate seat is expected to be highly competitive, especially with the added dynamic of Sen. Sinema’s departure from the Democratic Party. The race may become a three-way contest, making it even more challenging for candidates to stand out.
However, Lake remains determined and optimistic about her chances. She believes that her unique approach and alignment with Republican values will attract a significant number of voters, including disillusioned Democrats and independents.
As the Senate race in Arizona unfolds, all eyes will be on Kari Lake and her campaign strategy. The outcome of this contest has the potential to shape the future of Arizona and the Senate’s political landscape.
