A Kansas Man Released from Jail After Acting in Self-Defense at Local Nightclub Shooting
A Kansas man, Brandon Young, was released from jail on Thursday after officials determined that he acted in self-defense during a shooting incident at the City Nightz nightclub. According to Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett, Young opened fire in response to at least two gunmen who began shooting at the establishment.
“Based on the current status of the investigation, Mr. Young was not charged this morning,” a Thursday statement from the district attorney’s office read.
“The decision does not constitute a dispositive ruling. Additional investigation and forensic analysis will continue. Mr. Young will be released from custody after processing out of the adult detention facility later this afternoon.”
Following the incident, which left nine people wounded and two others trampled, Young was initially taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated battery.
Video Surveillance Supports Self-Defense Claim
“Given the legitimate public concern in this matter, a brief explanation as to the analysis regarding the evidence presented against Mr. Young this morning is appropriate,” the statement continued. “Video surveillance from inside the club was analyzed over the past several days. Based upon this detailed analysis, Mr. Young appears to have fired a weapon in response to shots fired by two different gunmen within the bar. Based upon the current status of the evidence, Mr. Young appears to have acted in self-defense/defense of a third party.”
The investigation is still ongoing, and law enforcement is currently seeking additional suspects.
