Former Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Thursday night.

Harris discussed various topics, including her upcoming book, 107 Days. After being introduced by host Stephen Colbert, she was greeted by a loud ovation from the audience that lasted for nearly 45 seconds.

“Madam Vice President, it’s nice to see you again,” Colbert greeted the former vice president. “First of all, you look rested. I’m happy for you.”

Harris laughed and nodded.

Colbert first asked Harris how long it took her to watch news broadcasts after she left office on Jan. 20, 2025.

“I’m just curious, once you left office, how long before you turned on the news again,” Colbert asked.

“Months, months,” Harris replied. “I’m just not into self-mutilation.”

Colbert then pivoted to what Harris endured after losing the election but still having to be in office for over two months.

During the interview, they talked about various topics, focusing mainly on Harris’s experiences as vice president. However, most of the first segment focused on Jan. 6, both in 2025 and 2021. She discussed Jan. 6, 2025, in which Harris presided over a joint session of Congress and certified the results of the 2024 presidential election, in which she was defeated. Colbert expressed sympathy for Harris having to endure it. He also compared it to Jan. 6, 2021.

“You had to be there on Jan. 6, 2025, and count out those electoral ballots and certify,” Colbert said. “First of all, thank you for doing your constitutional duty.”

“And I’m just curious, at any point as your counting did you go, ‘Anybody want to storm the Capitol?’” Colbert quipped.

“In all seriousness, Stephen, I was fully aware of what that moment required, not just of me, but of our country,” Harris said. “I talk about it in the book. It was a difficult day to be sure. I had been at the Capitol four years before because I was then vice-president-elect and was a United States senator. So, what I talk about in the book is that drive to the Capitol and remembering four years before.”

“It was a difficult day because it brought up, it conjured a lot in terms of what that exact day was, what that day has meant in the history of our country, the recent history of our country,” Harris said.

While discussing her experience, Harris also spoke highly of her predecessor’s actions during that time, former Vice President Mike Pence. Colbert asked her if she had spoken to Pence about Jan. 6.

“Did you talk to Pence about that at all, by any chance?” Colbert asked.

“I did not,” Harris responded. “But I’ve been very happy to compliment him as often as I can for having the courage to do what he did.”
