Kamala Harris struggles to define ‘culture’.
Vice President Kamala Harris Stumbles in Defining Culture
Vice President Kamala Harris left viewers puzzled as she stumbled through an attempt to define culture during a “moderated conversation” at the 2023 Essence Festival of Culture. The festival, described as a “crown jewel of Black culture,” celebrates the contributions of the Black community through business, music, and more.
Addressing a range of topics, from abortion to maternal health, Harris’s remarks gained attention after going viral on social media. The confusion surrounding her definition of culture became a hot topic of discussion.
The Importance of Culture in Affecting Change
During the conversation, one of the moderators asked Harris how people can channel their energy in intentional ways to bring about change, and how she views the role of culture in this process.
Harris responded, “Culture is a reflection of our moment and our time. It is the way we express how we’re feeling about the moment. We should always find times to express how we feel, as it brings joy to our lives.”
She continued, “We also need to have language and a connection to how people are experiencing life. Leaders should be conscious of how their words affect others.”
However, Harris did not provide further clarification on her remarks about culture, leaving many confused and criticizing her response as lacking substance.
Confusion and Criticism on Social Media
On social media, Harris’s answer was met with confusion and criticism. Radio and podcast host Chris Stigall described her as “the emptiest human being alive” and criticized her remarks as vapid and nonsensical.
Despite the controversy surrounding her definition of culture, the Essence Festival of Culture continues to be a significant platform for celebrating and amplifying the contributions of the Black community.
