Judge Sets Jury and Media Rules for Luigi Mangione Trial After Battle Between Prosecution and Defense

Amid sparring from the defense and prosecution in Luigi Mangione’s murder trial, the judge ruled Tuesday that the names of the jury picked for the trial will not be made public.

State Supreme Court Judge Gregory Carro ordered the two sides to develop a questionnaire for the next major round in the trial — jury selection — according to NBC News.

Mangione, 28, is charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City in late 2024.

Carro said the two sides need to develop an initial screening document for potential jurors that will be followed up by in-person interviews. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Sept. 8.

On Tuesday, Carro ruled in favor of expanded media access for the trial via an overflow room that will house media representatives who do not fit in the main courtroom.

“It has always been under consideration. They had to find the physical place, and it had to be staffed,” Carro said.

More than 80 news organizations are expected to attend, according to the New York Post.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has been trying to limit the crowd of spectators and media.

“The media attention surrounding this case — and the efforts of some of defendant’s supporters both to intimidate witnesses and to interfere with the functioning of the jury — will place extraordinary pressure on witnesses and potential jurors alike,” Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote in a letter.

He sought an overflow room without video.

“We are particularly concerned about the possibility that a spectator in an overflow room will clandestinely record the proceedings and any such recordings with others,” Seidemann wrote, according to NBC.

Carro grew testy over the implication that he could not manage the trial.

“Mr. Seidemann, this is not the first rodeo in this court with a high-profile case,” he said, approving both audio and video to the overflow room.

Carro noted that he has no patience with any antics from Mangione’s supporters, according to Fox News.

“The record demonstrates significant pretrial publicity surrounding this case, including extensive media coverage and repeated public demonstrations outside the courthouse,” he wrote.

“The People have documented threats, harassment, and exposure of personal information directed at individuals perceived as connected to the case, including witnesses and others. They further cite instances in which individuals identifying themselves as supporters of the defendant engaged in inflammatory and hostile public statements outside the courthouse and announced their intention to attend jury selection to attempt to speak to prospective jurors,” he wrote.

“There has never been a decision by this court to exclude or limit,” Carro said. “There have been discussions on expanding.”

Claims from the defense that the prosecution was hand-picking media outlets that will be allowed to cover the trial also irked the judge.

“I don’t want to hear any more about this,” he said.

The defense’s claims were “a reckless mischaracterization,” he said.
