Judge orders Trump to reinstall slavery exhibits at national parks

A Biden-appointed judge ordered the Trump administration to reinstall scrapped exhibits about slavery and climate change that had been removed from parks and monuments across the country.

U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley issued a preliminary injunction upon the request of a group arguing the Interior Department has been carrying out a “sustained campaign to erase history and undermine science.” Kelley echoed the group’s rhetoric in her ruling, saying agency’s conduct was undermining the integrity of the national parks and setting “a dangerous precedent of censorship and sanitization.”

“Plaintiffs have demonstrated a likelihood that Defendants’ efforts, ostensibly taken in the name of restoring dignity, instead seek to rewrite the Nation’s history with a white-out pen,” Kelley wrote. “History cannot be faithfully told while excluding the experiences of communities whose contributions, struggles, and achievements form an important part of our Nation’s story. Indeed, at a time of facts and alternative facts, the only thing we must be able to rely on as undeniable truth is history.”

Adding insult to injury, she demanded the exhibits be restored within 21 days, in time for the U.S.’s 250th anniversary.

On March 27, 2025, Trump signed an executive order, titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” meant to reverse the “corrosive ideology” promoted by the Biden administration, mainly its efforts to highlight wrongdoings in U.S. history in monuments and public parks. The Trump administration argued the effort promoted a negative image of Western culture, and sought to erase the displays from monuments and national parks.

“Over the past decade, Americans have witnessed a concerted and widespread effort to rewrite our Nation’s history, replacing objective facts with a distorted narrative driven by ideology rather than truth,” Trump wrote.

“This revisionist movement seeks to undermine the remarkable achievements of the United States by casting its founding principles and historical milestones in a negative light,” Trump wrote, claiming it distorted the U.S.’s “unparalleled legacy of advancing liberty, individual rights, and human happiness” into one “inherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed.”

“Rather than fostering unity and a deeper understanding of our shared past, the widespread effort to rewrite history deepens societal divides and fosters a sense of national shame, disregarding the progress America has made and the ideals that continue to inspire millions around the globe,” he added.
