Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) touted a new campaign website on Saturday meant to highlight the ascension of socialism in the Democratic Party as he embarks on a nationwide campaign tour ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Johnson said voters around the country understand the “common sense vs. crazy” contrast between Republicans and Democrats as he told Fox News’s Kayleigh McEnany about the “Contrast for America” website that launched earlier this week. A play on Newt Gingrich’s 1994 legislative agenda that helped Republicans win the 1994 midterm elections, Contract for America, the website features a horizontal image detailing various instances throughout history when communism or socialism failed.

“We really have an education component to what we’re doing out on the campaign trail right now,” Johnson said. “Because, sadly, young people have not been taught the truth about socialism and communism. It’s a dangerous road, and this is one of our efforts to make sure people know that.”
Johnson and other Republican leaders have increasingly discussed the nationwide rise of socialism throughout the summer as Democratic primary elections have pitted socialist candidates against more established, centrist incumbents. Socialist figures such as Michigan Senate candidate Abdul el Sayed and former Democratic candidate for governor of Wisconsin Francesca Hong have made headlines in recent weeks for past comments they made about defunding law enforcement agencies and wanting to cancel American holidays.
“And so on the website what we do is we show a summary of the history of this going back to 1918 to Soviet Russia and going through history of the 20th century to communist China ending in Venezuela with the eastern bloc over in Europe, it never works,” Johnson said. “And it ends in poverty, destruction, political violence, human suffering, that is the story of communism. So when you go out on the campaign trail and you promise free stuff to people, young people, that’s a siren song, that sounds great to them. No one is telling them they have to give up their freedom in exchange.”

“In short summary, it’s a contrast between common sense and crazy,” Johnson said before predicting the GOP will retain the majority in the House of Representatives.
“I’m in the middle of a 30-day, non-stop campaign tour going to 18 states across 34 districts in August,” Johnson said. “And everywhere I’m going… we’re seeing the energy of people because they understand the stakes are so high in this midterm. It’s less than 80 days away now and it’s going to be a fateful one for the country.”
