Johnson calls Miller allegations ‘serious’ but doesn’t say he should drop from race

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) spoke publicly for the first time about the ethics allegations against Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) on Wednesday, calling the claims “serious” but not calling for him to drop out of his reelection campaign.
Miller has faced growing scrutiny after Sen. Bernie Moreno’s (R-OH) daughter and Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, accused Miller of abuse. Miller has denied the allegations. Several GOP senators have backed Moreno by pressuring Miller to resign from the lower chamber and drop his midterm reelection bid in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District. But Johnson told Politico on Wednesday that he wants to see the chamber’s ethics investigation into the allegations play out.

“No,” Johnson said in response to a question about whether or not he will call on Miller to drop his reelection bid.
“I will tell Max what I tell everyone: These are serious allegations,” he continued. “I’m the father of two daughters who work on Capitol Hill. I mean, the allegations are serious. I think Max is taking them seriously. I think our colleagues are. But again, we have to allow this process to play out. It’s just begun.”
Johnson agreed with President Donald Trump’s assessment that reelection is going to be “tough” for Miller, echoing that things “don’t look good right now” for the Ohio congressman. However, Johnson insisted that the chamber’s “very active and engaged ethics committee” should complete its investigation.
Miller said in a CNN interview Tuesday evening that he would not resign or forgo his bid over the allegations, likening what he called his “resilient” nature to Trump’s.
“For no second am I going to sit here and continue to be debased by false and baseless allegations and be pushed out of a seat I have worked so hard to represent and done a terrific job for our community,” Miller said.
The allegations facing Miller include claims that he threw scalding water at his ex-wife, put a gun to her head, and mistreated their daughter, according to the New York Times.
Miller called for a House Ethics Committee investigation into himself on Tuesday, calling the allegations “horrific attacks on myself and family” and saying “I have absolutely nothing to hide.”
Bernie Moreno, on the other hand, has said the situation is the “seventh level of hell” for the Moreno family.
“This has been a horrific experience for my entire family,” Moreno said Tuesday. “My daughter lives in constant fear of this man, not like something that’s existential, but deeply in her heart, she fears what this guy is capable of.”
Multiple GOP senators, including Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Roger Marshall (R-KS), have backed Moreno’s calls for Miller to resign from the House.
