CNN Poll: Bad News for Biden on Debt Ceiling Talks

Majority of Americans Oppose Biden’s Stance on Debt Ceiling, Poll Finds

President Joe Biden is facing criticism over his stance on raising the debt ceiling, as a new poll reveals that most Americans disagree with him. According to a recent poll conducted by SSRS, 60% of respondents believe that Congress should only raise the debt ceiling if spending cuts are also implemented. This is bad news for Biden, who has opposed any cuts in the federal budget as part of the debt ceiling hike discussion.

Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has criticized Biden for not being able to find “a single dollar” to cut. McCarthy accused Biden of being willing to default on the debt rather than risk upsetting the radical socialists who are calling the shots for Democrats right now.

Despite Biden’s opposition to budget cuts, a majority of Americans also favor raising the debt limit to prevent America from defaulting on its financial obligations. According to the same CNN poll, 84% of respondents support raising the ceiling, with only 15% opposing it. However, Democrats are split on the issue, with 46% supporting raising the debt ceiling no matter what, and 45% supporting budget cuts.

Biden’s Approval Ratings Hit a New Low

The poll also revealed that Biden’s approval ratings have hit a new low, with only 40% of respondents approving of his performance, and 60% disapproving. This is consistent with a downward trend since January, when 45% approved of his performance. Biden’s ratings on key issues are even worse, with only 35% approving of his handling of the federal budget, 34% approving of his handling of the economy, and a mere 30% approving of his handling of immigration.

These results serve as a warning to Biden that he risks alienating half his own voter base by refusing to allow any budget cuts. Despite his proclamations that Trump was worse, his numbers are now consistently below Trump’s worst numbers. With just over a year until the 2024 election, Biden is in a weak position to win a second term, and he does not seem to be getting the message.

Conclusion

It looks as if most Americans side with McCarthy on budget cuts, and Biden’s approval ratings are at an all-time low. While Republicans and independents support raising the debt ceiling, Democrats are split on the issue. Biden’s refusal to allow any budget cuts may alienate half his own voter base, and he risks being in a weak position to win a second term in the 2024 election.
