Jill Biden to bring Kate Cox, who relocated from Texas for abortion, to State of the Union
First Lady Jill Biden Invites Woman Denied Abortion to State of the Union Address
In a powerful move, First Lady Jill Biden has extended an invitation to Kate Cox, a woman who was denied an abortion in Texas, to join her as a guest at the State of the Union address in March.
Kate Cox made headlines recently when she was forced to leave Texas in order to obtain the abortion she needed for her unborn baby with a fetal anomaly.
The White House announced this invitation on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of sharing personal stories like Cox’s to shed light on the impact of extreme abortion bans.
Standing Up for Women’s Rights
“On Sunday, the President and the First Lady spoke to Kate Cox, who was forced to go to court to seek permission for the care she needed for a nonviable pregnancy that threatened her life. They thanked her for her courage in sharing her story and speaking out about the impact of the extreme abortion ban in Texas,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
“The first lady invited Kate to join her as a guest at the State of the Union and Kate accepted, so those are ways that you’re going to hear the president lift up those very personal stories,” Jean-Pierre added.
Cox’s case reached the Texas Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled against her, stating that she did not meet the requirements for a medical exception abortion under the state’s abortion ban.
Her legal team argued that Cox’s unborn baby had a fatal fetal condition and that continuing the pregnancy posed a threat to her future fertility.
Cox, who already has two children, was more than 20 weeks pregnant with a baby diagnosed with trisomy 18, a condition that can cause abnormalities like heart defects.
About 95% of pregnancies with trisomy 18 result in miscarriage, but some babies can survive past birth and live for several years.
Texas law allows for abortions only when the pregnancy seriously threatens the life of the woman or carries a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function.
The Texas Supreme Court emphasized that Cox’s doctor did not provide sufficient evidence to meet the requirements for an exception to the abortion ban.
Cox’s attorneys argued that she needed a dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion due to the risks associated with vaginal labor after two previous C-sections.
They also pointed out that Cox had experienced complications during her pregnancy, including cramping and discharge, which required multiple visits to the emergency room.

A Call for Change
“No one disputes that Ms. Cox’s pregnancy has been extremely complicated. Any parents would be devastated to learn of their unborn (fatal condition) diagnosis. Some difficulties in pregnancy, however, even serious ones, do not pose the heightened risks to the mother the exception encompasses,” stated the Texas Supreme Court in its ruling.
The court also urged the Texas Medical Board to provide further guidance on the state’s abortion ban.
It’s worth noting that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton warned that doctors or hospitals performing Cox’s abortion could face criminal prosecution.
The Biden administration and his reelection campaign have made abortion a central issue as the election cycle heats up.
In a new ad titled ”Forced,” the Biden campaign features another Texas woman, Dr. Austin Dennard, who obtained an abortion out of state for her unborn baby with anencephaly.
Dr. Dennard, a Dallas OBGYN and mother of three, is among several women suing Texas to clarify the “medical emergency” exception to the state’s abortion ban.
In her court testimony, Dr. Dennard emphasized that her pregnancy did not make her critically ill, but she believed she would not be able to receive an abortion in her state solely due to her baby’s lethal anomaly.
The Biden campaign’s ad also attempts to link former President Donald Trump to state abortion bans.
How does Cox’s case exemplify the flaws in the Texas abortion ban and the lack of understanding and empathy towards women in difficult and potentially life-threatening situations
Nted out that the Texas abortion ban forced Cox to leave the state and travel to another state to seek the necessary care, causing unnecessary stress and financial burden.
First Lady Jill Biden’s invitation to Cox to join her at the State of the Union address sends a powerful message about the importance of women’s rights and access to reproductive healthcare. By publicly sharing Cox’s story, the First Lady aims to shed light on the detrimental impact of extreme abortion bans like the one in Texas.
This invitation is not just a symbolic gesture, but a way to amplify the voices of women who have been affected by restrictive abortion policies. It serves as a call to action for lawmakers to reconsider and protect the reproductive rights of all individuals.
Abortion is a deeply personal and often difficult decision for women, and denying them the right to make choices about their own bodies is a violation of their autonomy and human rights. It is crucial that we continue to fight for the fundamental right to reproductive healthcare, including access to safe and legal abortion services.
Cox’s case highlights the flaws in the Texas abortion ban, which fails to consider individual circumstances and puts unnecessary obstacles in the way of women seeking abortion care. The denial of Cox’s request for a medical exception shows a lack of understanding and empathy towards women in difficult and potentially life-threatening situations.
The presence of Kate Cox at the State of the Union address will serve as a reminder to lawmakers that their decisions have real and profound consequences on women’s lives. It will amplify the voices of countless women who have been silenced and marginalized by restrictive abortion legislation.
As we move forward, it is essential that we continue to advocate for accessible reproductive healthcare and work towards policies that respect and protect women’s rights to make decisions about their own bodies. The invitation extended by First Lady Jill Biden to Kate Cox demonstrates a commitment to standing up for women’s reproductive rights and ensuring that their stories are heard and understood.
We must continue to fight for comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including access to safe and legal abortion services, to ensure that all women have the freedom to make choices about their own bodies and lives. Kate Cox’s invitation to the State of the Union address is a reminder that our fight is not over and that we must continue to push for progress and justice in the realm of women’s rights.
