“We had a duty to win, and we didn’t,” Bates told the New York Post. “I think about that all the time.”
“But I don’t see why that painful conversation for the party needed to be publicly reopened right now,” he added.
The former first lady rejected Bates’s criticism and had a message for him.
“I want to say to Andrew, ‘Call me up, and say it to my face, buddy,’ said Jill Biden.
But Bates’s criticism of the contents and timing of Biden’s book was shared by many Democratic political operatives, according to the New York Post. Many strategists wanted to keep political narratives focused on poor public opinion polls for President Donald Trump while emphasizing affordability concerns, such as high gas prices. None wanted to rehash Biden’s failures and struggles as president during the 2024 presidential campaign.
“We need this as much as we need a hole in the head,” said Democratic political strategist Jim Manley.
“It’s an unnecessary distraction,” he added. Manley stressed it would have “zero impact on the election,” due to Trump’s poor polling numbers.

“I think Jill Biden must have had a stroke herself to think that her husband was up to the job,” said the senior aide.
“If she can sit back and listen to his constant drivel for over 4 years, she’s the one with real cognitive decline,” said the aide, whom the New York Post didn’t identify. “The fake doctor may want to consider self-medication if it took this long to gain some self-realization.”
