Jeffries slams Trump for bringing ‘MAGA circus’ into town for Knicks game

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, wearing Knicks gear, criticized President Donald Trump for “injecting himself” into the NBA Finals as Trump prepares to attend Game 3 at Madison Square Garden between the Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. Jeffries said Trump doesn’t seem to understand Knicks-associated people and referenced a supposed lack of knowledge about Karl Rove versus Karl-Anthony Towns.

Trump will become the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, and the White House framed the visit as part of Trump’s passion as a longtime sports fan. However, the appearance has led to disruptions for fans, including the cancellation of an outdoor viewing party near the arena. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said an additional watch party will be held at Bryant Park, alongside othre locations, inviting fans and boroughs across the city to watch together.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), decked out in Knicks gear, jabbed at President Donald Trump on Monday for “injecting himself” into the NBA Finals, ahead of the president’s attendance at Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

“It also is not clear to me that Donald Trump is a big Knicks fan,” Jeffries told reporters. “I mean, does this guy even know the difference between Karl Rove and Karl-Anthony Towns? I don’t think so.”

Towns is a center for the Knicks, while Rove is a Republican political pundit and former deputy chief of staff to George W. Bush.

Jeffries continued, “He’s just injecting himself into the NBA Finals because he always has to bring the MAGA circus into town, and that’s unfortunate.”

Trump will be the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, which will be at Madison Square Garden on Monday night. The president will be joined by White House communications director Steven Cheung and Office of Presidential Personnel Director Dan Scavino, according to people familiar with the president’s plans.

“Sports are at the forefront of American culture, and President Trump loves them as the people’s president,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales told the Washington Examiner. “As a lifelong fan, the president looks forward to watching the Knicks compete to bring home their first NBA championship in more than 50 years at Madison Square Garden tonight.”

TRUMP BRINGING AN ENTOURAGE AND SECURITY DISRUPTIONS TO GAME 3 OF KNICKS-SPURS

However, Trump’s appearance is causing disruptions in viewing and attendance plans for the game, with the Knicks being forced to cancel an outdoor viewing party outside the arena. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who will also be at the game, said the city will instead host a viewing party at Bryant Park.

“These watch parties have become a celebration of New York City itself,” Mamdani said. “From every borough and every neighborhood, this city has come together to cheer on the Knicks and share in a moment that belongs to all of us. That’s why we’re adding Bryant Park as an additional watch party location, so even more fans can be part of this incredible Knicks Finals run. Whether you join us in Bryant Park, Central Park or at Brooklyn Bowl, we invite New Yorkers to come together and support our team. Let’s go Knicks.”
