James Talarico backtracks on transgender athletes in women’s sports
James Talarico,a Texas Democratic Senate candidate,has recently revised his stance on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports. Historically, he advocated for athletes to compete according to their gender identity rather than their biological sex and opposed two laws signed by Governor Greg Abbott that mandated participation based on biological sex in K-12 and college sports. As teh campaign approaches the upcoming election in Texas, Talarico appears to be adjusting his position to better align with the political climate in the state.
Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico on Wednesday backtracked on his support for transgender athletes playing in women’s sports, as his campaign fights to coalesce support in the red state ahead of the general election this fall.
The state representative has long pushed for athletes to play on teams that correspond to their gender identity, instead of their biological sex. During his time in the state legislature, Talarico opposed two bills that Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) signed into law that required athletes to play on teams corresponding to their biological sex in K-12 and collegiate programs.
