Israeli military experiences one of its deadliest days since Gaza ground invasion commenced
Israeli Soldiers Killed in Gaza Strip
Tragedy struck on Tuesday as ten Israeli soldiers lost their lives in combat in the Gaza Strip. This devastating day marked one of the deadliest for the military since the ground invasion began.
Deadly Battle in Shejaiya
Nine troops were killed in a fierce battle in the heart of Shejaiya, making it one of the deadliest encounters during the Israel-Hamas war. Additionally, another soldier from the Combat Engineering Corps’s 614th Battalion lost his life in a separate incident in northern Gaza. These casualties bring the total number of Israeli soldiers killed in action during the conflict to 115.
The fallen soldiers include Col. Itzhak Ben Basat, 44, who was the head of the Golani Brigade’s commander’s team and the highest-ranking Israeli troop to be killed in the war.
According to the Times of Israel, four soldiers were attacked in Sehjaiya while entering a cluster of three buildings believed to be abandoned. They were ambushed by Hamas militants who threw grenades and opened fire on them. Others who tried to come to their aid also faced the same fate.
Remembering the Fallen
The IDF has released the names of the soldiers killed in the battle in Shejaiya. They are Col. Itzhak Ben Basat, Lt. Col. Tomer Grinberg, Maj. Roei Meldasi, Maj. Moshe Avram Bar On, Capt. Liel Hayo, Sgt. Achia Daskal, Sgt. Eran Aloni, Maj. Ben Shelly, Sgt. 1st Class Rom Hecht, and Staff Sgt. Oriya Yaakov.
Israel declared war on Hamas following the Oct. 7 massacre, which claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 people. The majority of the victims were civilians, including women and children, many of whom showed signs of torture or severe burns. Israel initially responded with an intense aerial bombardment campaign before launching a ground invasion on Oct. 27.
Israeli officials have reported that around 7,000 Hamas fighters, roughly a quarter of the group’s suspected fighting force, have been killed during the war. Additionally, 500 militants have been detained in Gaza in the past month. Israel is actively searching for Hamas’s senior leadership, including their leader Yahya Sinwar, who is believed to be hiding in the south.
The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 17,000, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza health ministry. This has led to significant criticism of Israel, including from the United Nations. The United Nations General Assembly recently voted in favor of an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, following the United States’ previous blocking of ceasefire calls in the U.N.’s Security Council.
