Gilad Erdan, Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, showed his displeasure with the body’s vote on new Palestinian privileges and a path to statehood in a unique way.

At the end of his speech, in which he denounced the U.N.’s advance of “the establishment of a Palestinian terror state,” Erdan held up a portable paper shredder and fed papers representing the U.N. charter through the whining contraption. He accused members of shredding the charter themselves.

Erdan began his speech by taking out the portable shredder and saying, “This is your mirror. … So that you can see exactly what you are inflicting upon the U.N. charter with this destructive vote,” before shredding the papers.

The U.N. charter is the founding document of the peacekeeping organization and serves as “an instrument of international law, and UN Member States are bound by it.”

Erdan’s appeal seemed to have failed, as the U.N. then voted 143 to 9 in favor of Palestinians being granted additional “rights and privileges” and earning reconsideration toward becoming a member state, with 25 nations abstaining. The U.N. building erupted in applause as Israel’s delegation, including Erdan, sat still and stone-faced.

Thank you to the peoples of the world, nations, & majority of States who voted for Palestinian self-determination, for Palestinian existence & future. Thank you for standing for humanity, for the UN Charter, & for freedom & justice. Onwards, until 194th Member 🇵🇸🇺🇳 pic.twitter.com/H15egK4zwj

“The political theater called the UN has adopted an artificial decision, detached from reality, which only encourages terrorism,” Israeli foreign minister Israel Katz said in a post on X. “Israel seeks peace, and peace will only be achieved through direct negotiation between the parties.”

“Israel is grateful to all the countries that did not support or cooperate with this twisted move, choosing to stand on the right side of history and morality.”
