‘Isn’t up for debate’: New Mexico governor hits back at Trump over ‘New America’ posts

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico responded strongly to former President Donald Trump’s teasing about renaming her state “New America.” Trump had previously proposed renaming various geographic features, including the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, with patriotic titles. He shared multiple maps suggesting New Mexico’s name change, prompting Grisham to assert that New Mexico’s name has historic meaning and is not up for debate. She criticized Trump’s focus on symbolic map changes while claiming that her Democratic-led administration is actively improving residents’ lives through programs like free childcare and healthcare. grisham posted a map of New Mexico with a message emphasizing her state’s longstanding identity. The White House was contacted for clarification amid these exchanges. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-AZ) fired back at President Donald Trump after he teased the idea of changing her state’s name to “New America.”

Grisham, who has led the state since 2019, took to social media after Trump hinted that New Mexico could be next for a name change. Trump previously pushed for the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America and, more recently, signed an executive order to rebrand Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

LABOR DAY GAS PRICES ARE HIGHEST EVER FOR HOLIDAY

“New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed,” Grisham said. “What is up for debate? Who’s showing up for working families. While the President tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, gas prices keep soaring. Americans are also spending more at the grocery store, losing access to health care and wondering if they’ll ever be able to afford a home.”

“Under Democratic leadership here in New Mexico, we’re providing families with free childcare and college, protecting access to health care and investing in housing. While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work,” she added.

Grisham also posted a map of New Mexico along with the message.

The governor posted on Sunday after Trump shared a map of New Mexico with an “X” running through the word “Mexico” and the word “America” written underneath.

Trump went further on Monday morning, posting eight different maps of the Southeastern U.S. showing New Mexico renamed “New America.” One of the images depicted the entirety of North America, including Canada, Mexico, Cuba, some Caribbean islands, and Greenland as being part of the United States.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the White House on Monday for further clarification on the posts.

Also on Monday, the president posted a punchy Labor Day message on Truth Social to his rivals.

TRUMP SENDS HOLIDAY WISHES TO ‘RADICAL LEFT LUNATICS’ WHILE POSTING SLEW OF ‘NEW AMERICA’ MAPS

“Happy Labor Day to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics, Communists, and Dumocrats who will do anything possible to destroy our Country,” Trump said on Truth Social. “These Deranged People, after fighting for 10 years, should finally acknowledge that your Favorite President (ME!), knows how to WIN!

“They’re going to give it one last shot at ruining America, but we’re not going to let that happen,” he continued. “We’re going to win the Midterms, BIG, and SAVE AMERICA!”
