IRGC Rebels Tried To Bomb Ayatollah’s Home: Report

According to a confidential report from a January 3 meeting, members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who became disaffected, attempted to strike Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s residence with artillery.

It seems that the attack was thwarted quickly. The report triggered by rising tensions in the country, touches on the recent riots which began when a young 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, was arrested by the morality police for allegedly violating Iran’s dress code, and died while in custody, setting off protests. During the meeting, speaker Gholamali Rashidi referenced an individual who targeted the Supreme Leader’s residence with artillery, saying, “Since the start of the protests, we have had personnel who have defied orders. Thanks to the immediate response of our fellow members in the unit, the perpetrators were identified and apprehended.”

IranWire reports that the meeting was called to mark the third anniversary of the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force by the United States’ military. Commanders who attended the meeting told the Supreme Leader that some of their forces refused orders to shoot at civilians, and there was an increase in conflicts amongst IRGC ranks, as well as a drop in morale. During the gathering, decisions were made on how to address the situation, including freeing detainees and providing more funding. Khamenei directed the commanders to announce their decisions in the following weeks.
