Iowa Governor Calls Special Session to Revive Abortion Restrictions

The state of Iowa is taking action to revive its abortion restrictions after the Iowa Supreme Court blocked the state’s Heartbeat Act last month. Governor Kim Reynolds has called for a special session of the state legislature to address this issue.

The split court decision in June struck down a pre-Dobbs bill that would have banned abortion once a fetal heartbeat could be detected, around six weeks. After the law was invalidated by the state’s highest court, abortions were only banned after 20 weeks.

In a statement, Governor Reynolds expressed her commitment to protecting the rights of the unborn and supporting pro-life principles. She believes that the pro-life movement is the most important human rights cause of our time.

“Not only will I continue to fight against the inhumanity of abortion, but I will also remain committed to supporting women in planning for motherhood, promoting fatherhood and parenting, and continuing policies that encourage strong families,” Reynolds stated.

The special session is set to begin on July 11. However, it is unclear what a new abortion law would look like, as many current legislators were not in office when the 2018 Fetal Heartbeat Law was approved. There may be differing opinions among Republicans regarding the strictness of the law.

Furthermore, it is uncertain whether the Iowa Supreme Court would strike down another pro-life law. The court’s previous ruling suggested a potential openness to lowering the legal bar for abortion laws in the state, which could lead to a new pro-life law being deemed constitutional in a legal challenge.

Democrats in the state legislature are expected to oppose any measures that further restrict abortion. They argue that a strong majority of Iowans support reproductive freedom and view the special session as a political move by Governor Reynolds.

“Republican extremists, led by Gov. Kim Reynolds, are rushing to take away Iowans’ established rights and personal freedoms. And they hope they can do it fast enough that Iowans won’t even notice,” said state Senate Minority Leader Pam Jochum.

While Republicans have seen successes in implementing pro-life laws in states like Indiana and North Carolina, they have faced disappointments in Kansas and Oklahoma.
