Internet explodes over Ray Epps’ ‘lame’ misdemeanor charge for January 6 actions.

The Department of ⁤Justice Charges⁣ Ray Epps with Misdemeanor for January 6 Actions

The Department of Justice has filed a misdemeanor charge of disorderly ‍conduct against⁣ Ray Epps, an Arizona man who was caught on video encouraging protesters to enter the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Epps⁣ was also seen on video on ‌the⁣ Capitol grounds⁣ on January 6, speaking to protesters just before⁢ they broke down barricades.

Many people on social media⁣ have raised⁣ concerns about the misdemeanor ⁣charge, suggesting that it indicates Epps may have⁢ been ‍working with the federal government during the protest. Epps and the FBI have denied these allegations.

Julie Kelly, a reporter for American Greatness, expressed her⁢ skepticism about the charge in a post on X. She questioned why Epps‌ was not facing more serious charges like obstruction⁣ felony or civil ‍disorder.

Charlie‍ Kirk,⁢ the leader of⁤ Turning Point USA, also expressed his skepticism about the charge. He pointed out that Epps, who was captured on video urging people ⁢to storm the Capitol, somehow⁣ managed to avoid more serious charges like seditious conspiracy.

Others on social media expressed their outrage at the misdemeanor charge, arguing that Epps’ actions on January 6 should warrant more severe consequences. The case has sparked conspiracy theories that ⁢Epps may have been a federal informant.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in January 2022, Senator ⁣Ted Cruz questioned an FBI official‍ about Epps’ involvement in the Capitol incursion. The official refused ⁣to answer whether ‍Epps had been working with the bureau.

Cruz also showed photographs of ⁢Epps allegedly whispering to protesters before they tore ⁤down a barricade ⁣around the Capitol. The FBI had initially included Epps in a wanted notice, but he was later removed from the list after being questioned by the bureau.

The decision to charge Epps with a misdemeanor has raised further questions about the government’s⁣ handling of the January 6 incident.

Despite the skepticism⁣ expressed by some, the Department of Justice has defended‌ its decision to charge Epps with a misdemeanor. In a statement, the⁣ department‌ explained that‍ while Epps’ actions were concerning, they ⁢did not rise to the level of more serious ‌charges.

In ⁤order to bring charges of obstruction felony or civil disorder, the prosecution would need to prove that Epps ‌knowingly engaged in conduct ⁣that obstructed or impeded the lawful‍ functions of the government.⁢ The department determined that there was insufficient evidence to ‌establish this level of intent‌ or knowledge on Epps’ part.

Furthermore, the⁣ department emphasized that misdemeanor ‌charges still‌ carry significant penalties, including imprisonment for up to one year and substantial fines. The ⁢department ⁢believes that the misdemeanor charge adequately addresses Epps’⁢ actions and serves as a deterrent to others who may consider similar ⁤behavior in the⁢ future.

It is ⁤important to note that the Department of Justice takes the events⁤ of January 6 very seriously and is ‌committed to holding‍ accountable all those who broke the law and ‌participated in‌ the attack⁣ on the Capitol. Epps’ misdemeanor‍ charge is one of many charges the ⁢department has filed against individuals involved in‌ the attack.

The department’s investigation into the events of January 6 is ongoing, ‍and additional charges may be filed as more evidence⁤ is⁤ uncovered. The department is dedicated to ‍ensuring that justice is served and that‌ those responsible for‍ the violence⁣ and destruction that ⁣occurred on that day⁢ are held‌ accountable.

While ‌questions and concerns may arise regarding individual ‌charges, it is crucial⁢ to allow‌ the justice system to run its ⁢course and trust⁢ in ⁤the expertise of the ‍prosecutors and investigators involved in these cases.

The Department of Justice remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting democracy, and safeguarding the safety and security of the American people.
