Charlie Kirk, the leader of Turning Point USA, also expressed his skepticism about the charge. He pointed out that Epps, who was captured on video urging people to storm the Capitol, somehow managed to avoid more serious charges like seditious conspiracy.

Others on social media expressed their outrage at the misdemeanor charge, arguing that Epps’ actions on January 6 should warrant more severe consequences. The case has sparked conspiracy theories that Epps may have been a federal informant.

Cruz also showed photographs of Epps allegedly whispering to protesters before they tore down a barricade around the Capitol. The FBI had initially included Epps in a wanted notice, but he was later removed from the list after being questioned by the bureau.
