India tests nuclear-capable missile to deter China

India tested a nuclear-capable ballistic missile amid growing military threats by China. Defense officials in New Delhi confirmed they successfully tested a surface-to-surface missile called Agni-V on Wednesday.
The missile reportedly hit its target “with a high degree of accuracy.” Agni-V has a range of more than 3,000 miles and it can carry a payload on more than one metric ton, including a nuclear warhead.
The test came after Indo-Chinese talks to resolve border tensions grounded to a halt in recent weeks.
“Why shouldn’t we have an insurance policy against a belligerent China?” asked Maj. Gaurav Arya (Ret.) military commentator. “Of course we’re aiming it at China, who else is there?”

Indian officials said they are committed to the “no first use” doctrine and they will only use nuclear weapons for self-defense. Meanwhile, India’s nuclear program is not authorized under United Nations resolutions.
