India rejoices as Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully lands on the moon.

Indian Spacecraft Successfully Lands on Moon’s South Pole

By Nivedita‍ Bhattacharjee

An Indian spacecraft made ⁣history today by landing on the⁤ rugged, unexplored south pole of the moon. This mission is not only crucial to lunar exploration‌ but‍ also a‍ significant achievement for India’s standing as a⁤ space power. It⁣ comes ‌just ⁣days after a similar Russian lander crashed, making⁤ India the fourth nation to⁢ successfully land ⁤a spacecraft on the moon, following ⁣the‌ United States,⁤ China, and Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was attending a ⁤BRICS summit‍ in South Africa, expressed his excitement and pride, stating, “This moment is unforgettable. It is ⁤phenomenal. This is a victory cry of a new India.” The⁣ successful ⁤landing was met with jubilation across the country,‍ with people celebrating, setting off firecrackers, ‌and dancing in the⁣ streets.

The⁢ Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, named⁣ after “moon vehicle” in Hindi and Sanskrit,‍ is expected⁢ to remain ‍functional for two weeks. During this time,⁢ it will conduct a ‌series of ⁤experiments, including a spectrometer analysis⁢ of the lunar⁢ surface’s⁢ mineral composition. The successful landing has given India‌ the confidence to extend its reach ⁣to possible voyages to Mars and Venus.

India’s reputation for cost-competitive space engineering⁤ is also set to‌ receive ⁤a boost. ⁢The⁤ Chandrayaan-3 mission was launched with a ⁢budget of about 6.15 billion ‌rupees ⁢($74 million), which is less than the cost⁢ to produce the 2013 Hollywood⁣ space thriller “Gravity.”

Furthermore, the‌ south⁤ pole landing is of great significance ⁢as it⁢ could provide valuable data ‌on ‌the moon’s ⁤geology and ⁢the presence of water ice. The region’s rough terrain and potential resources, such as fuel, oxygen, and drinking water, make it an‌ important area for future⁢ missions.

The successful⁢ landing has garnered international recognition, with Russia’s space‍ agency ⁤Roskosmos congratulating India and highlighting the importance ⁤of moon exploration for all mankind. Russian Foreign‌ Minister Sergei Lavrov also personally⁢ congratulated his Indian counterpart during a bilateral meeting at⁤ the BRICS summit.

India’s space ambitions don’t stop here. The country ⁤is planning to launch a mission in September to study the sun, and preparations for a human space flight are underway, with a target ⁣date of 2024.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission’s success marks a significant milestone for India’s⁢ space program and sets the stage for further advancements in ⁢space exploration.
