Illinois lawmaker visits US-Mexico border during migrant crisis
Illinois Lawmaker Urges Biden Administration to Close Southern Border
An Illinois state lawmaker is sounding the alarm on the urgent need to address the influx of migrants at the U.S. southern border. After visiting Texas firsthand, State Rep. Brad Halbrook is calling on policymakers to take action.
An Eye-Opening Experience
“It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least,” Halbrook shared. “I would advise everybody who is involved with policymaking to take a trip down there to see what the real story is because you get the truth when you are down there on the ground.”
Halbrook witnessed the staggering number of migrants crossing the border, with thousands arriving daily. He highlighted a pecan farm town where many attempted to cross the rivers, resulting in tragic deaths.
A Tragic Toll
“People are drowning in the river,” Halbrook revealed. “The farm we visited, 57 bodies were discovered in one week on this pecan farm in the last few months, and that’s just one week, that’s not all of them.”
Halbrook emphasized that failed leadership has led to migrants being transported to Democratic cities like Chicago. He firmly believes that closing the border is the solution to this crisis.
Time for Change
“The solutions are quite simple, but [Gov. J.B. Pritzker], the mayor of Chicago, and the president of the United States continue to ignore what the solution to this problem is,” Halbrook asserted.
Halbrook’s concerns are echoed by others, including state Sen. Andrew Chesney, who criticized the allocation of resources to migrants over citizens.
Legislative Action Needed
“People do not like this. When you start to siphon off resources from the citizens to the migrants, people do not like it,” Chesney stated. “The best healthcare that J.B. Pritzker delivers to people in Illinois is to non-citizens and migrants. They all have better healthcare than virtually every citizen.”
Halbrook believes it is time for the legislature to intervene, as Gov. Pritzker continues to issue disaster proclamations without a clear resolution.
Bringing Attention to the Crisis
“That’s why this trip was important to bring attention to this very issue,” Halbrook emphasized. “We have railed on the governor. We think he is missing his emergency powers. We think it ends after 30 days and the General Assembly needs to be called in to work through these issues.”
It is crucial for policymakers to address the border crisis and take immediate action to protect communities and allocate resources effectively.

What are the immediate humanitarian needs that must be addressed in response to the southern border crisis?
Humanitarian Crisis
The situation at the southern border has reached crisis levels. Halbrook emphasizes that it is not just a matter of border security, but also a humanitarian crisis that needs immediate attention. The overwhelming number of migrants, including unaccompanied minors, seeking asylum is putting a strain on resources and infrastructure. Halbrook noted the dangerous conditions migrants face during their journey, as well as the risks posed by human traffickers and drug cartels. He expressed grave concern for the safety and well-being of these individuals, particularly the younger ones who are more vulnerable. Beyond the humanitarian aspect, Halbrook highlights the national security implications of the situation. With the focus heavily on processing and caring for migrants, the border patrol’s ability to effectively address other security threats, such as drug smuggling and potential terrorist activities, is severely limited. Halbrook sees a need for comprehensive immigration reform that not only addresses the immediate crisis but also strengthens border security and ensures a fair and efficient asylum system. He urges the Biden administration to take swift action and work with Congress to find bipartisan solutions. Furthermore, Halbrook is urging the federal government to provide greater assistance to the states affected by the influx of migrants. He highlights the strain on local resources and the need for additional funding to support shelters, healthcare, and educational services for these migrants. Halbrook recognizes the complex nature of immigration policy but emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that considers both humanitarian concerns and national security. He hopes that his firsthand account and call for action will resonate with policymakers and lead to meaningful change. Halbrook’s call for collaboration extends beyond party lines. He encourages lawmakers from both parties to come together and put aside their differences in order to address this pressing issue. The southern border crisis, he asserts, requires a unified and concerted effort from all policymakers. As the number of migrants at the southern border continues to rise, the urgency for action becomes even greater. State Rep. Brad Halbrook’s plea to close the southern border echoes the concerns of many Americans who are looking for immediate solutions to this ongoing crisis. It is now up to the Biden administration and Congress to prioritize the welfare and security of both migrants and American citizens by addressing this issue effectively and efficiently.
