Despite the ongoing crisis at the southern border, Joe Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security said the department is focused on bringing previously deported immigrants back into the U.S.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made those remarks during an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday. His declaration came on the heels of his announcement that four deported families would be granted “humanitarian parole” and allowed to enter the U.S. in order to live with their teenage children.

And while the Biden administration has faced growing calls to tackle a recent surge in illegal border crossings, Mayorkas said bringing these deported illegal immigrants is his “top priority.”

“This is our highest priority is to reunite these families,” Mayorkas said. “As we so powerfully saw, these are young people in their formative years. These are sometimes children as young as three years old. We are addressing the needs and vulnerabilities not only of the children, but also of their mothers, their fathers.”

Critics have argued the stated mission of DHS is to protect Americans from foreign and domestic threats, but Mayorkas is neglecting this in order to focus on those without a legal right to reside in the country.
