Ibram X. Kendi’s anti-racism center faces scrutiny over financial practices.
Boston University Launches Inquiry into Ibram X. Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research
Boston University is taking action following the recent layoffs of nearly one-third of the staff at Ibram X. Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research. The center, established in the midst of political turmoil after the death of George Floyd, is now under investigation due to complaints about its culture and grant management practices.
Expanding the Inquiry
Boston University spokesperson Colin Riley stated, “We are expanding our inquiry to include the Center’s management culture and the faculty and staff’s experience with it.” Dr. Kendi and the university are committed to the center’s mission and strongly refute the allegations made in recent complaints and media reports.
The university’s Compliance Services Office received an anonymous complaint from a sociology professor and former employee at the center, who described a workplace environment characterized by “fear of retaliation and discrimination.” The complaint also highlighted the sudden departure of several “high-level” employees.
Despite receiving substantial donations, the Center for Antiracist Research has faced criticism for its limited research output. The center, known for its left-wing perspective, has only produced two original research papers in over three years of operation. Most of its work consists of op-eds published on the center’s website.
Ibram X. Kendi, a prominent figure in critical race theory, has authored controversial bestselling books such as “How to Be an Antiracist” and “Antiracist Baby.” His work has drawn criticism from Republican and conservative groups, who argue that it exacerbates racial tensions.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Boston University for further comment.
