‘I just don’t see the out here’: Joe Concha on Karmelo Anthony trial

Joe Concha, a Washington Examiner columnist, described Karmelo Anthony’s first-degree murder trial as “open and shut,” arguing that Anthony’s actions don’t fit self-defense. He said evidence suggests Anthony was repeatedly asked to leave a Texas track meet, and that the situation escalated without a real fight before Anthony stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in the heart.

Concha noted prosecutors have rested and the defense is now calling witnesses, adding that the stakes are high since a conviction could bring a sentence of up to 99 years. He also pointed to how bringing weapons to tense situations can lead to severe outcomes and suggested the defense faces major challenges given Anthony’s character and the circumstances presented.

Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha issued a stark take on the Karmelo Anthony murder trial, saying, “I just don’t see the out here in any way, shape, or form.”

Karmelo Anthony, 19, has been charged with first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, on April 2, 2025. Anthony has argued that he acted in self-defense, but if found guilty, he could face up to 99 years in prison.

“It seems open and shut, he was not asked to leave once, he was asked to leave 13 times and still would not and then was not even shoved, not a fight, not a punch, just a little push like ‘You got to go’ and then stabs this poor kid in the heart,” Concha said on Fox New’s the Big Weekend Show Sunday.

Concha referenced Alex Pretti in Minnesota, who was killed in a physical confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Jan. 24, saying, “You bring a gun to a situation like that, bad things can happen.”

“You bring a knife to a situation like this. Again, Karmelo Anthony had no record of any bad behavior, great grades, good kid,” Concha said. “In terms of character, this would be a very hard case for the defense to win.”

The prosecution rested on June 6, and the defense has begun calling witnesses.

“I’m no lawyer; I’m just the guy on the couch saying this looks bad,” Concha said.
