McCarthy suggests Hunter Biden’s plea could bolster House investigations.

Speaker McCarthy: Hunter Biden’s Guilty Plea Won’t Deter Investigation

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) assured reporters that Hunter Biden’s guilty plea to federal charges would not hinder the House’s ongoing investigation into an alleged bribery scheme involving Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden, and a Ukrainian energy executive. In fact, McCarthy believes that the plea deal might even strengthen the GOP’s efforts.

Investigation Continues Unabated

McCarthy emphasized that the House Oversight Committee’s inquiry would not be swayed by the “sweetheart deal” Hunter Biden received from the Department of Justice. On the contrary, he suggested that this development could provide an opportunity to gather more information for the investigation.

The Oversight Committee is currently examining unverified information obtained from a paid FBI informant through an FBI-generated FD-1023 tip sheet. This document alleges that both Hunter Biden and President Joe Biden accepted $5 million bribes from an executive at Burisma, the Ukrainian energy giant where Hunter served on the board.

“This plea deal does not impact our investigation,” McCarthy stated. “In fact, it should enhance our efforts, as the DOJ should now be able to provide Chairman Comer with any information he requires, without citing a pending investigation as an excuse.”

However, U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who is leading the Hunter Biden investigation, has stated that the inquiry is still ongoing. This may pose challenges for Chairman Comer in obtaining the requested information.

DOJ’s Alleged Tactics

When questioned about the DOJ’s assertion that the investigation is ongoing, McCarthy dismissed it as a ploy to withhold information from the House of Representatives under the guise of an ongoing investigation.

“How can Hunter Biden plead guilty, avoid jail time, and yet the DOJ claims there’s still an investigation, using it as an excuse to deny the U.S. House of Representatives access to documents? This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” McCarthy declared. “You cannot plead guilty, evade jail time, and then refuse to provide documents to the House. That will not be allowed. That will not work.”

Committee Vows to Press On

Earlier on Tuesday, Chairman Comer reaffirmed his committee’s commitment to investigating the alleged bribery scheme involving Biden and his son.

McCarthy also criticized what he perceives as a two-tiered justice system, where former President Donald Trump faces potential jail time for keeping classified documents in his home, while Hunter Biden escapes without any prison sentence.

“The question here is about equal justice,” McCarthy pondered. “One of the leading opponents of the current president is now indicted and expected to serve jail time, while the president’s son, whose investigation lasted a significant period, gets off scot-free.”
