House votes to allow hot rotisserie chicken to be bought with SNAP
the House passed an amendment Thursday, introduced by Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR), that would let SNAP benefits be used to buy hot rotisserie chicken. the measure passed 384-35 just before the full farm bill was approved.
Supporters said the rules currently allow participants to buy rotisserie chicken only if it’s cold, not hot. Voting on the amendment saw 196 Democrats and 187 Republicans in favor, while 23 Republicans and 12 Democrats voted against; Rep. Kevin Kiley (an autonomous who caucuses with Republicans) also supported it.
SNAP,a long-running program created in 1939,helps low-income households afford food and is funded and authorized through the farm bill.

“Currently, participants can buy a rotisserie chicken if it’s cold, but not if it’s hot,” the National Chicken Council wrote on X. “Thank you Rep. Crawford for your leadership on this issue!”
Overall, 196 Democrats and 187 Republicans voted for Crawford’s amendment. Meanwhile, 23 Republicans and 12 Democrats voted against the amendment. California Rep. Kevin Kiley, an independent who caucuses with Republicans, also voted in favor.

SNAP, also known as food stamps, is a government program that has been around since 1939 and is designed to help low-income individuals afford food by supplementing households’ grocery budgets. It is administered through the Agriculture Department, and benefit levels are determined based on net income and household size, operating on the assumption that 30% of a household’s net income is spent on food.
The popular program now has over 41 million recipients and is authorized through the farm bill.
