House staffer for Sara Jacobs has car stolen in DC carjacking

A senior staffer for Representative Sara Jacobs (D-CA) was carjacked at gunpoint on Friday in Washington, D.C.’s Navy Yard neighborhood, an area populated by Capitol Hill staffers. The incident occurred outside a harris Teeter grocery store, resulting in the theft of the deputy chief of staff’s car, laptop, phone, iPad, staff ID, and bag. Authorities arrested two male suspects, aged 14 and 15, the latter of whom faces charges for carjacking, while the 14-year-old was charged wiht weapons offenses. The Navy Yard has seen a rise in crime, with motor vehicle incidents up by 10% from the previous year, and carjackings, which predominantly involve firearms. In recent years, D.C. has witnessed several similar incidents involving political figures,including carjackings and assaults. Reports highlight ongoing concerns regarding urban safety as crime patterns evolve.

A senior staffer for Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) was a victim of an armed carjacking on Friday in a Washington, D.C., neighborhood where many Capitol Hill staffers live.

The incident took place at the Harris Teeter in Navy Yard. Jacobs’s deputy chief of staff’s car, work laptop, phone, iPad, staff identification, and bag were stolen.

Two suspects were arrested Saturday following the incident, and two firearms were recovered. The suspects were 14- and 15-year-old males. The 15-year-old was charged with carjacking, and the 14-year-old was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Jacobs’s office did not comment on the incident.

Navy Yard, a popular neighborhood in D.C., has had many incidents in the last few months that residents have documented on an X account called NavyYardCrime.

Motor vehicle incidents are up 10% from last year, making them one of the only incidents that have worsened since 2024. Total violent crime is down 22%, whereas property crime is down only 2%.

There have been 104 carjackings to date in 2025, and 79% of them involved guns. Fifty-four percent of arrests to date this year involved juveniles, with 83% of the arrests having a D.C. home address. 

There have been a handful of incidents involving people who work in politics in D.C. In 2023, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked at gunpoint near his home in Navy Yard. The congressman was not harmed, and his car was eventually returned. Also in 2023, Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was assaulted in her apartment building. Last year, former Trump administration official Michael Gill was shot in a carjacking spree. He later died due to his injuries.
