Jim Jordan chosen as next speaker by House Republicans.
House Republicans Nominate Jim Jordan for Speaker
House Republicans have chosen Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as their nominee for speaker, following the unsuccessful bid of Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA). In a closed-door meeting, Jordan secured the nomination with a vote of 124-81, surpassing Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA) who also vied for the position. However, Jordan still needs to solidify support from a few holdouts before the matter is referred to the full House for a vote.
There is a possibility that the vote will be delayed as some Republicans are currently away from Washington, D.C. for the weekend. It is expected that the vote will be postponed until enough members return to meet the required 217-majority vote threshold.
Jordan emerged as a strong contender earlier in the week when he ran against Scalise in another closed-door meeting. Although Scalise narrowly won, Jordan dropped his bid and endorsed Scalise. However, opposition to Scalise’s speakership from several Republican lawmakers prompted him to withdraw from the race, giving Jordan another opportunity.
Despite his reputation as a flame-thrower, Jordan faces challenges in gaining support from moderate Republicans and swing district members. Many of Scalise’s and McCarthy’s supporters have indicated that they will not back Jordan in the race or vote for him on the floor.
Can Jordan Secure the Votes?
The crucial question now is whether Jordan can secure the necessary votes, as he can only afford to lose four. Democrats are expected to vote for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), setting the stage for a multi-round election similar to the one experienced in January when it took McCarthy 15 rounds to secure the leadership position.
The vote comes after McCarthy’s removal as speaker, leaving the top leadership position vacant for the first time in history. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) has been appointed as speaker pro tempore in the interim, with limited power as Republicans work towards electing a new leader.
Until a new speaker is elected, the House remains effectively paralyzed, which is particularly concerning as Israel faces a new war with Hamas. Additionally, the longer it takes to elect a new speaker, the less time lawmakers have to address critical appropriations bills and avoid a government shutdown in mid-November.

What concerns have Republican lawmakers expressed about Rep. Jordan’s bid for speaker, and how do these concerns relate to his role in the Ohio State University sexual abuse scandal?
Sibility that Rep. Jordan may face challenges in his bid for speaker, as some Republican lawmakers have expressed concerns about his role in the Ohio State University sexual abuse scandal. Jordan served as an assistant wrestling coach at the university when multiple athletes were allegedly abused by the team doctor. While Jordan denies any knowledge of the abuse, some lawmakers question his ability to lead as speaker given these allegations.
Despite this controversy, Jordan has gained a reputation as a strong conservative voice within the Republican Party. He is a co-founder of the Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative lawmakers who advocate for limited government and fiscal responsibility. Jordan is known for his passionate defense of conservative principles and his frequent clashes with Democrats during committee hearings.
Supporters of Jordan argue that his conservative credentials make him the ideal candidate for speaker. They believe that he will push for smaller government, lower taxes, and fewer regulations. They also believe that his no-nonsense approach to politics and willingness to take on establishment Republicans will resonate with the party’s base.
Opponents, however, question Jordan’s ability to effectively govern and work across party lines. They argue that his confrontational style may hinder any progress in Congress and lead to further polarization. Some fear that his controversial reputation could also negatively impact the Republican Party’s image and ability to attract independent and moderate voters.
It is important to note that the speaker of the House plays a crucial role in setting the legislative agenda and leading the chamber. They are responsible for guiding legislation through the House and working with the Senate and the president to enact laws. The speaker also represents the House both domestically and internationally, and their influence extends beyond their own party. The speaker’s ability to build consensus and work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle is paramount to effective leadership.
The nomination of Jim Jordan as speaker reflects the ongoing divisions within the Republican Party. It remains to be seen whether Jordan can gather enough support from his colleagues to secure the position. Regardless of the outcome, the choice of the next speaker will have far-reaching implications for the Republican Party, Congress, and the nation as a whole.
