House Republicans advance measures to slash Mayorkas salary – Washington Examiner
House Republicans have proposed two amendments targeting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s salary. These amendments, attached to a crucial annual spending bill, aim to either block federal funding for Mayorkas’s salary or reduce it to just $1. One amendment was proposed by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and the other by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). Both measures reflect Republican criticism of Mayorkas’s performance, particularly concerning issues at the southern border. These proposals have been included in the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security.
House Republicans advanced two amendments to halt the government from using federal funding to pay Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s salary, tucking the measures into one of their annual must-pass spending bills.
Lawmakers approved two separate proposals that target Mayorkas’s salary, including one amendment proposed by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) that would prohibit the use of federal funding for Mayorkas’s salary as well as another by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) that would reduce the secretary’s pay to just $1. Both amendments will be attached to the annual appropriations bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
“My amendment would effectively fire Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of homeland security for the atrocious job that he is doing with our southern border and [the] overall security of our nation,” Greene said on the House floor on Wednesday.
The amendments come as House Republicans have repeatedly targeted Mayorkas over his policies at the southern border, blaming the top Biden administration official for record-high illegal immigration and increased crime caused by those migrants.
The House even went so far as to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border in February, a historic effort led by Greene.
“Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed my impeachment articles against Secretary Mayorkas, making him the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached since 1876,” Greene said. “If the House impeached Secretary Mayorkas, we should certainly not pay him.”
The amendments will be included in the appropriations bill funding DHS, which is set for a full vote in the House on Friday.

Lawmakers are also targeting the salaries of other top Biden administration officials in other appropriations bills up for votes this week, including those for Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The proposals would also decrease their salaries to just $1.
Even if the three appropriations bills manage to make it through the House with those amendments included, they are unlikely to be considered by the Senate in their current form, setting the stage for a drawn-out spending fight that could extend past the election in November. Senate leaders and the White House could also seek to punt the funding deadline of Oct. 1 until after it is known who will be president in 2025 and which party will be in control of the upper chamber.
