House passes contested State Dept. 2022 funding bill

House lawmakers passed a State Department funding bill in a narrow near party-line vote. The body voted 217-to-212 on Wednesday to approve the $62.2 billion package for the department and its foreign operations. The bill comes as part of appropriations for the next fiscal year, which starts on October 1.

Three Democrats joined all Republicans in voting ‘no’ on the bill while citing concerns that it increases the department’s funding by 12 percent, which is way above reasonable adjustment. Republicans also argued the bill allows U.S. money to be used to fund abortion providers overseas.

“It also doubles funding to the United Nations populations fund,” noted Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.). “This organization has historically supportive coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) needs at least 10 GOP votes to pass all 12 of her 2022 budget bills by September 30, which Republicans have said they will not support.
