House Democrats Vote Against Bill To Classify Fentanyl As Schedule I Drug While Thousands Die From Overdoses

Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted against a bill this week to classify fentanyl-related substances (FRS) as Schedule I substances — a vote that comes even as a record number of Americans are dying from those compounds every year.

Schedule I substances are substances which have been listed in the Federal Register. “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” According to the DEA. “It would permanently place FRS into Schedule I of the CSA [Controlled Substances Act], simplify registration processes for certain research with Schedule I substances, removing barriers that currently impede such work, and provide for exemption of individual FRS from Schedule I when evidence demonstrates it is appropriate,” The committee also added.

The Text Certain exceptions to the legislation are provided for research purposes. The process by which fentanyl-related substance could be exempted form the list includes action by the U.S. Attorney or if it is specifically listed under another schedule. The legislation’s impact on current legitimate medical uses for FRS is unclear, but it can still be easily modified.

Democrats seem to have their primary opposition to this bill in increasing the mandatory minimum sentencing, as they see it more as a mental issue than a criminal problem.

The most recent National Drug Threat Assessment by the DEA Says Most of the fentanyl imported into the USA by Mexican drug cartels is through the unsecured southern border.

Tom Homan, the former Acting Chief of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, stated in a statement for The Daily Wire: “Fentanyl has killed more Americans than any other drug the past two years, including all drugs currently classified as Schedule 1.”
