House Democratic leaders reject GOP discussions on McCarthy motion to vacate.
House Democratic Leaders Discuss Possible Motion to Vacate Against House Speaker McCarthy
House Democratic leaders have not yet engaged in discussions regarding a potential motion to vacate against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), according to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
Democrats have not yet begun conversations about whether they would support removing McCarthy from his position or if they would protect their GOP counterpart from potential ousting. Jeffries emphasized that this matter is not currently a priority for party leaders.
McCarthy Faces Threats of Speakership Ouster as Government Shutdown Looms
“The motion-to-vacate question is a hypothetical one that’s not before us,” Jeffries stated during a press conference on Tuesday. “We have not discussed it, and I do not anticipate any discussions about it.”
These comments come in response to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) issuing his strongest warning yet against McCarthy’s leadership. Gaetz warned the speaker that he would call for a motion to vacate unless McCarthy adhered to the commitments he made to House Republicans earlier this year. In a passionate speech on the House floor, Gaetz accused McCarthy of being “out of compliance” with the agreement brokered in exchange for support during the speakership elections in January. Gaetz listed several unfulfilled demands as evidence.
“I rise today to serve notice, Mr. Speaker, that you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role,” Gaetz declared. “The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you into immediate, total compliance or remove you pursuant to a motion to vacate the chair.”
Gaetz initially raised the confidence vote over the weekend, threatening a motion if McCarthy did not approve an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. He even suggested that he would work with Democrats and extend a hand across the aisle if it meant electing a new House leader.
An impeachment inquiry into Biden has also become a key demand among some House Republicans who have threatened to withhold their support for any government spending legislation unless an investigation is initiated.
Later on Tuesday, McCarthy announced that he would authorize an inquiry into the president and his son Hunter, directing the House Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees to lead the effort.

Democrats criticized this move, labeling the inquiry as ”illegitimate” and an attempt to appease former President Donald Trump’s demands.
“This impeachment is based on no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden. But it’s all the evidence we need to show Kevin McCarthy has lost control of the gavel,” stated House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA). “He has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Republican Conference is controlled by conspiracy theorists, devoid of reasonable voices that are here to govern and solve problems. Donald Trump is the ultimate puppet master.”
