In a shocking turn of events reminiscent of the Jussie Smollett saga, a man in San Diego who alleged he was set ablaze due to his sexual orientation is now being portrayed by the police as the instigator of the situation. This incident began with an alleged assault on a pregnant woman.

On Monday, Scott Rowin, 39, recounted to KGTV-TV that he had been assaulted a few days earlier while taking a walk. According to Rowin, two men in their 20s or 30s hurled homophobic slurs at him before dousing him with a mysterious liquid.

Rowin vividly described the horrifying experience, stating, “Immediately after that, I went up like coals on a barbecue. It started off really big.” He managed to extinguish the flames using the “stop, drop, and roll” technique, all while in survival mode.

Rowin sustained second-degree burns primarily on his side and back, unsure if surgery will be necessary. He firmly believes this incident was a hate crime, emphasizing the hate-filled slurs he endured and suggesting that his attackers were specifically targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

Expressing concern for others, Rowin stated, “This can still happen in 2023. There are still a lot of haters out there. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. This time it was fire. What will it be next time?”

However, the San Diego police have now presented a different narrative. They revealed that video evidence shows the man, before being set on fire, had assaulted a pregnant woman. The assault occurred shortly after 10:40 p.m. on June 12, the same day Rowin claims he was attacked.

According to the police, officers arrived at the scene minutes after being dispatched, but the suspect had already fled. The pregnant woman was found injured and bleeding, requiring hospital treatment.

Subsequently, the report of the man being set on fire emerged. Police investigations have since determined that the man who allegedly assaulted the pregnant woman was the same individual who suffered burn injuries.

Scott Rowin needs to be charged with filing a false police report. And he should pay for the police resources used to investigate his claims.

The police have refrained from disclosing further details, acknowledging the complexity of the investigation. They are diligently examining all aspects and allegations, emphasizing their commitment to taking all acts of violence seriously.

No charges have been filed at this time.
