Clinton Stresses Importance of Democracy at White House Art Award Ceremony
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a rare appearance at the White House for a Japanese-sponsored art award, where she emphasized the significance of democracy. Despite her surprise loss to former President Donald Trump in 2016, Clinton’s presence highlighted the Biden administration’s commitment to engaging with Japan and the Asia-Pacific region.
“President [Joe] Biden and Vice President [Kamala] Harris traveled through Asia this week, and that demonstrates, just as the event today does, this administration’s commitment to America’s engagement with Japan and the crucial Asia-Pacific region, where so much of the history of the 21st century is being written,” Clinton said Tuesday in the East Room.
Clinton highlighted the rapidly changing world and the importance of understanding our past and present while striving for a better future. She emphasized the role of arts in invigorating and strengthening democracy, echoing President Biden’s sentiments when he reinstated the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
“When so much is happening to change the ways that we work and live, and how we connect with one another, how we relate to the rest of the world, it’s so important for us to recognize the critical role that the arts play in helping us understand our past and present while inspiring us to create a better future,” she said. “As President Biden said when he reestablished the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the arts invigorate and strengthen our democracy and point the way toward progress.”
Clinton’s appearance received a warm welcome, with first lady Jill Biden introducing her and expressing gratitude for her lifetime of service. The first lady acknowledged Clinton’s significant contributions as a former Democratic presidential nominee, secretary of state, senator, and first lady, stating that she has left an indelible mark on the country.
“Wow, you are so loved,” Biden said.
While Clinton graced the White House with her presence, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) directed House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and two other congressional committee chairmen to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and his family’s business dealings.
The White House event coincided with the announcement of the Praemium Imperiale, a prestigious global arts prize awarded by the Japan Art Association for lifetime achievement in the arts. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, celebrated the Praemium Imperiale Laureates at the White House in 1994. It is worth noting that Bill Clinton faced impeachment by the House in 1998.
