A Planned Attack on Colorado Amusement Park Thwarted by Suspect’s Suicide
In a shocking turn of events, a heavily armed man who had allegedly plotted an attack on a mountaintop amusement park in Colorado ended up taking his own life instead. When he was found, he was dressed in tactical clothing resembling law enforcement attire and was heavily armed with a semi-automatic rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, and multiple loaded magazines for both weapons.
Furthermore, Medina was wearing body armor and a ballistic helmet. Law enforcement officials discovered multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on his person, and additional IEDs were found in his vehicle during a subsequent search.
Suspect Had ‘Ghost Guns’
Law enforcement officials conducted a thorough search of the park to ensure no other IEDs had been planted on rides or in other areas. Controlled detonations were carried out as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, there was no risk to the public.
During a press conference, Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario revealed that the firearms found on Medina were likely “ghost guns” without serial numbers, making them untraceable and suggesting they were not purchased legally.
A note was discovered near Medina’s body, stating “I am not a killer, I just want to get into the caves.” However, authorities cannot confirm if Medina wrote the note.
Despite having no prior criminal history, it is believed that Medina intended to cause much more destruction than he ultimately did. Sheriff Vallario expressed gratitude that Medina chose not to carry out his plan, as it could have resulted in numerous casualties.

Sheriff Vallario emphasized the potential devastation that could have occurred, stating, “Whatever his preparation was, he chose instead, as we believe at this point, to commit suicide. We are, to say the least, extremely lucky that he did not fulfill whatever plan he may have intended. It would certainly have caused a devastating impact on this community… Potential for many, many people to be killed and injured.”
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, situated on a mountain above the Colorado River, offers various attractions including an Alpine rollercoaster and caves. The park has not yet released an official statement regarding the alleged planned attack.
Nancy Heard, the park’s general manager, expressed gratitude for the swift action and thorough work of law enforcement and other authorities involved in the investigation. She reassured the public that the park will reopen once it is deemed safe.
It is worth noting that this incident comes shortly after the discovery of the body of Robert Card, the gunman responsible for the Lewiston, Maine mass shooting. Card, a U.S. Army reservist and firearm instructor, killed 18 people in a bowling alley and a bar before taking his own life.
