Recent laws in Florida and Tennessee have banned children from attending live performances that depict or simulate nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or specific sexual activities. While these laws aim to protect children, they have sparked outrage among some adults who engage in sexualized animal role-play and drag performances.

The “Furry” Community Reacts

The Orlando “furry” convention Megaplex has been particularly affected by the Florida law, which has forced the event to become adult-only. “Furries” are people who wear animal costumes and role-play as anthropomorphized animals. While many “furries” deny their interest is sexual, the majority of them report being sexually attracted to animals. Convention organizers have even linked to a site that discusses the “hotly contested topic” of bestiality among “furries.”

Drag Performers Face Similar Challenges

In Tennessee, drag performers are also facing challenges due to a law that prevents minors from attending sexual performances. While the law aims to protect children, drag performers and activists are unhappy that children’s access to drag shows could be limited. Enforcement of the law is currently pending federal litigation.
