Sen. Josh Hawley Questions CEO on Google’s Influence in the AI Industry
During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on artificial intelligence regulations, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) engaged in a compelling exchange with Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, one of the largest AI companies. Hawley raised concerns about Google’s stake in Anthropic and its growing control over the industry.
The Power of Anthropic’s Chatbot in Google Search
Hawley highlighted the potential impact of incorporating Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, into Google Search. He expressed concerns about how this integration could be used to manipulate and control users’ attention.
Hawley pointed out that Google had invested $300 million in Anthropic and questioned whether this investment was detrimental to consumers in the United States due to Google’s influence over the industry.
Google’s Influence on User Attention
Hawley emphasized that Google’s primary goal is to capture and retain users’ attention, as it directly affects their revenue. He imagined the power that Anthropic’s generative AI technology could give Google in terms of influencing and directing users’ attention.
Hawley expressed his concerns about the potential manipulation of Google search results using AI, suggesting that it could sway the opinions of voters and even impact election outcomes.
Ethical Training of Anthropic’s AI
Amodei responded by explaining the ethical training methods used for Claude, referred to as “constitutional AI.” He mentioned that predefined values are set to determine the answers and content presented to users.
Hawley remained skeptical, arguing that the definition of ethical principles is subjective and could be influenced by the entity that owns the AI, such as Google or Microsoft.
In late 2022, Google invested $300 million in Anthropic, acquiring a 10% stake in the company. Additionally, Google is Anthropic’s preferred cloud provider. This relationship is similar to that of OpenAI and Microsoft, who invested $10 billion in the startup. Google has also made significant investments in its own AI development, including Google Bard.
While Anthropic may not be as well-known as other AI developers, it is one of seven tech companies committed to safeguarding user data through the adoption of protective measures.
During the hearing, Amodei was joined by British professor of computer science Stuart Russell and Yoshua Bengio, the founder and scientific director of the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms.
