Biden vows more federal aid for Maui’s recovery after Hawaii fire.
President Biden Promises Federal Aid to Rebuild Maui After Devastating Fires
President Joe Biden made a heartfelt promise to provide further federal aid to help rebuild Maui, Hawaii, after the devastating fires. Joined by first lady Jill Biden, Gov. Josh Green (D-HI), his wife, and other Hawaiian lawmakers, the president visited the site of the fires and met with first responders before delivering an address.
“The country grieves with you, stands with you, and will do everything possible to help you recover,” Biden said.
President Biden empathized with the people of Maui by sharing his own experience of loss, recalling the tragic death of his first wife and daughter in 1972. He acknowledged the support he received from a Hawaiian lawmaker during his grieving process and emphasized the importance of unity in times of hardship.
Throughout his speech, President Biden emphasized the significance of closely coordinating rebuilding efforts with the wishes of native Hawaiians. He symbolically referred to the nearby Banyan tree as a beacon of hope for the community’s recovery.
The president delivered his address in Lahaina, a historic town that had been completely destroyed by the fires. Tragically, over 100 lives have been lost as a result of this disaster.
Despite speculations that President Biden might declare a climate emergency during his speech, no such announcement was made. The focus remained on providing immediate assistance and support to the affected community.
