Biles dominates, claims eighth national title in gymnastics.
Simone Biles Makes History with Eighth All-Around Title at U.S. Gymnastics Championships
Simone Biles, the legendary gymnast, claimed her record-breaking eighth all-around title at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in San Jose, California on Sunday. Despite her recent return to competition after a two-year hiatus, Biles showcased her dominance and left the crowd in awe with a magnificent floor routine. With just one year until the Paris Olympics, Biles has sent a clear message to the gymnastics world.
The 26-year-old athlete is making her comeback after withdrawing from multiple events at the Tokyo Games due to a temporary loss of spatial awareness in mid-air, known as ‘the twisties’.
Biles secured her seventh title in 2021, tying Alfred Jochim’s record set in 1933.
“I’ve been doing it for so long that I don’t think about numbers, I think about my performance and overall I hit eight for eight,” Biles shared in an interview with the Peacock network.
“Eight is the lucky number this year.”
Entering the second day of the championships with a commanding 2.55 point lead, Biles further extended her advantage by scoring 14.850 from the vault. She continued her impressive performance with a solid routine on the uneven bars, earning a score of 14.050. Biles’ balance beam routine, sharper than the previous day, garnered her a score of 14.850.
She concluded the competition with her strongest event, the floor exercise, electrifying the crowd at SAP Center with a score of 15.400.
“It’s really amazing,” Biles expressed her gratitude for the crowd’s reaction.
“Everybody in here believes in me, my teammates believe in me, my coaches, my family, everyone.
“I just need to start believing in myself a little bit more, but it feels amazing. I love the fans, I love the crowd. It was really special.”
Biles finished the two-day competition with a total score of 118.450, a remarkable 3.900 points ahead of Shilese Jones in second place and 7.350 points clear of Leanne Wong, who secured third place.
With this victory, Biles also became the oldest U.S. women’s all-around champion, having won her first title a decade ago in 2013.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist returned to gymnastics after her break following the Tokyo Games, triumphing at the Core Hydration U.S. Classic in suburban Chicago earlier this month.
During the first night of the competition in San Jose, Biles executed a Yurchenko double pike, a vault so difficult that no other female gymnast has ever performed it.
As the Paris Games approach, Biles has set personal goals for herself, which she prefers to keep private.
“I like to keep them personal just so that I know what I’m aiming for,” she explained.
“It’s better that way. I’m trying to move a little bit differently this year than I have in the past and it’s working so far.”
