A Foreign “Disinformation” Tracker Seeks Policy Director to Influence US Government

The Global Disinformation Index (GDI), a British organization dedicated to combating disinformation, is actively seeking a talented individual to fill the role of “U.S. Policy and External Relations Director.” This position aims to shape policies and strategies that will have a significant impact on the United States federal government and state governments.

GDI has received substantial support, including a $100,000 grant from the State Department and approximately $860,000 from the government-funded nonprofit National Endowment for Democracy. With this backing, GDI is determined to make a difference in the fight against disinformation.

Developing Policy Recommendations and Engagement Strategies

The chosen candidate will play a crucial role in developing policy recommendations and engagement strategies specifically tailored for the United States. The job description emphasizes the urgent need to address the growing influence of disinformation in today’s digital landscape.

“Disinformation has become a business,” the job description states. “Today’s internet business models reward engagement above all else. These models monetize attention without considering the quality of the content garnering that attention, or the harm that may result.”

The position will involve engaging with various government agencies, including the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, both houses of Congress, and key state governments and strategic civil society organizations. By collaborating with these entities, the policy director will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the fight against disinformation.

A Lobbyist or Advocate?

While it remains unclear whether this position functions as a lobbyist, it is worth noting that the Department of Homeland Security prohibits the use of federal funds for lobbying. However, the issue of money being fungible raises questions about the potential influence of these funds.

Michael Chamberlain, director of government ethics watchdog Protect the Public’s Trust, highlights the financial aspect of the “Censorship Industrial Complex” and its ties to federal funding. He urges elected representatives and agencies to consider the implications of supporting projects that infringe on the rights of American citizens.

Congressional Scrutiny and Continued Funding

House Republicans have expanded their investigation into the Biden administration’s alleged “censorship,” including the State Department’s funding of GDI. Despite this scrutiny, the State Department stands by its decision to support GDI, as confirmed in their response to Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA).

Previously, the Biden administration considered establishing an in-house “disinformation” czar at the Department of Homeland Security. However, the Disinformation Governance Board, led by Nina Jankowicz, was established and abolished within four months.

GDI did not provide a comment in response to the Washington Examiner’s request for further information.
